‎On the Power, Wisdom and Goodness of God, as Manifested in the Creation of animals‎

‎Philadephia, Carrey, Lea & Blanchard, 1837, in-8, LXXII-519 pp, 20 pl, 6 pp. d'annonce, Toile brune, pièce de titre imprimée, La planche XV est placée en frontispice. Les planches I et III sont "bis"; la planche XI est "ter". Seconde édition américaine de cet ouvrage de l'entomologiste William Kirby (1759-1850). L'édition originale est de 1835. Kirby adhérait à la théologie naturelle, pensée dominante dans la Grande Bretagne de la fin du XIXe siècle, telle que John Ray et William Paley la professaient : il mettait l'accent sur la beauté et la complexité de la nature comme preuve de l'existence de la divinité. Malgré cette orthodoxie scientifique, il lui arriva de citer les premiers penseurs de l'évolution, tels qu'Erasmus Darwin, le grand père de Charles, et Lamarck. Vers la fin de sa vie, il fut lecteur du Voyage du Beagle de Charles Darwin. Il n'adhéra cependant jamais à la pensée évolutionniste et il meurt, en 1850, neuf ans avant la publication de l'Origine des espèces. Son oeuvre majeure, élaborée en collaboration avec William Spence, y An Introduction to Entomology, or Elements of the Natural History of Insects, fut publié pour la première fois en quatre volumes entre 1815 et 1826 (Londres, Longman).
