Although Franklins was not found, the explorers were able to gather much information about the people, geography, and natural science of the region. Kane, passing up Smith Sound at the head of Baffin Bay, advanced into the enclosed sea which now bears the name of Kane Basin, thus establishing the Polar route of many future Arctic expeditions. Here the expedition passed two winters, and attained what was to remain for sixteen years the highest northern latitude reached by explorers, 80 35' N..Testo ben conservato..

Illustré de près de 300 gravures in et hors-texte à partir de croquis de l'auteur, dont un portrait de Kane et un de Grinnell en frontispices et des vignettes de titre, ainsi que de 2 cartes dépliantes, dont une volante. "Explorateur américain de l’Arctique, Elisha Kent Kane (1820–1857) étudia la médecine dans sa ville natale de Philadelphie, et devint chirurgien de la marine américaine en 1843. En 1850, il embarqua comme médecin-chef et naturaliste à bord d’une expédition de recherche de Sir John Franklin (1786–1847), explorateur et officier de la marine britannique disparu dans l’Arctique canadien depuis 1845. Financée par le marchand new-yorkais Henry Grinnell et menée par la marine américaine, l’expédition explora le détroit de Lancaster et le chenal de Wellington, et aboutit à la localisation d’un des camps de Franklin, mais d’aucun des hommes. L’expédition était dirigée par le lieutenant Edwin Jesse De Haven et se composait de deux navires, le brickAdvanceet le brickRescue.
