This German Expressionist group of artists originated in Munich and, together with Die Br cke, was responsible for the important innovations in German art. Der Blaue Reiter was founded in 1911 by Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke and Alexej von Jawlensky. There was no real organized movement, the participants mainly maintained their friendship. The artists van der Blaue Reiter regarded emotion as the main factor of creative ability. The group's name comes from Kandinsky's 1903 painting Der Blaue Reiter. This painting was published in 1912 in the Almanac Der Blaue Reiter and gave the movement its name. The First World War put an end to the movement: Marc and Macke were killed, Klee, Kandinsky and others left the country. The latter later returned to Germany and were appointed as teachers at the Bauhaus. The best-known artists of this group are Kandinsky, Marc, Macke, von Jawlensky, Paul Klee, Gabriele M nter, Marianne von Werefkin, Lyonel Feininger, Hans Arp, Alfred Kubin, Robert Delaunay, Arnold Sch nberg and Heinrich Campendonk.
