Ford Madox Brown was een eigenzinnige kunstenaar, die in zijn lange carriere veel invloeden onderging, maar altijd doelbewust zijn eigen weg koos. Nog voor de oprichting van de Preraphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 ontwikkelde hij een nieuwe stijl, beinvloed door de kunst van de periode voor Rafael. Hij schilderde prerafaelitische meesterwerken zonder zich ooit officieel bij de broederschap aan te willen sluiten. Met zijn nauwgezet en raak geobserveerde landschappen liep hij vooruit op de pleinairistische effecten van de impressionisten. Hij zette zich af tegen de academie en tegen de traditionele victoriaanse formules. Kinderen en arme mensen beeldde hij af zonder sentiment of paternalisme. In zijn meesterwerken Een laatste blik op Engeland en Werk, levensechte taferelen uit het moderne leven, wist hij intens realisme te verbinden met een originele visie en sociaal en politiek engagement. Zijn radicale sympathieen kregen ook gestalte in zijn strijd tegen de werkloosheid in Manchester. Hij was nauw betrokken bij de Arts and Crafts Movement en ontwierp talrijke glasramen en meubelen. Met zijn muurschilderingen voor het stadhuis van Manchester gaf hij een nieuwe inhoud en vorm aan kunst in openbare gebouwen.
