Il suo nome è spesso associato alla proposta di scavare un largo canale nel deserto del Sahara e riempirlo con il kerosene in modo da far capire l'intelligenza umana agli alieni. His name is often associated to the proposal to dig a big channel in Sahara desert and filli it with kerosene so that aliens who observe earth can understand human intelligence. The crater Littrow on the Moon is named in his honour.
