First English edition (in the same year as the American first). Moderate wear to binding, esp. the spine-ends. Bookplate to front pastedown. The handcoloured frontispiece seems to be missing often and shows ‘The great seal of the Swiss Confederation and the costume of the Landweibel of the 22 Cantons, with the number of inhabitants. All the Swiss cantons are described: Italian skies - education - churchbells costumes - fairs - mines & marriages etc. / Valais: Crossing the Furka-Rhone Glacier - Inn - Manufactures and Agriculture - Love of liberty - cretinism. / Fribourg: ‘If one mentions having been in Fribourg, he is immediately asked ‘Did you hear the organ, and did you taste the Gruyère cheese?’
