Il s agit de la première réédition de l'oeuvre écrite au XIXème siècle (1885-1906) par Jean-Jules Linden et publiée à l'époque sous la forme d une revue mensuelle. Chaque planche est accompagnée d'un texte qui donne la diagnose latine (détermination des caractères propres à une espèce donnée en permettant l'identification), des références bibliographiques, la description de la plante, du lieu de sa découverte, de sa récolte, de son acclimatation et de sa diffusion dans le monde. Les dessins, d une facture et d'une délicatesse exceptionnelles, représentent des espèces récoltées dans les forêts tropicales et cultivées dans les serres des grands collectionneurs européens.
