The text discusses the Golden Age of Flemish violins and the historical challenges in identifying their origins. Due to limited research and the destruction of archives during periods of warfare such as the Sack of Antwerp in 1576 (the Spanish Fury) many Flemish instruments were misattributed. After more than forty years of research, the author compiled a comprehensive history of string instrument making in the Southern Low Countries during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The book is divided into two parts: the first provides historical context, information on instrument collections, and the wood used by instrument makers; the second presents Flemish violin makers with detailed photographs of their instruments, mainly from the Musical Instruments Museum in Brussels and various private collections.
