A System of Mineralogy. Descriptive Mineralogy, comprising the most recent discoveries

Elle est illustrée de nombreux bois gravés dans le texte. Il s'agit de l'une des contributions les plus importantes à la minéralogie américaine et à la science en général (Schuh). L'ouvrage a été maintes fois réédité et copieusement augmenté : chaque édition a concouru à la formation d'une véritable entreprise minéralogique. Cette cinquième édition est la dernière à laquelle contribua son auteur, James Dwight Dana (1813-1895). Elle été publiée en collaboration avec le minéralogiste George Jarvis Brush (1831-1912), qui s'est chargé des parties concernant le chalumeau. En outre, elle comporte pour la première fois des données optiques dans les descriptions des minéraux. Dana participa à la fameuse expédition Wilkes (1838-1842) en tant que géologue et conchyliologiste : ses travaux ont notamment fourni des arguments en faveur de la théorie de l'évolution de Darwin. Son fils, Edward Salisbury Dana, reprendra la publication du System of Mineralogy, essentiellement pour la gestion des appendices. Exemplaire enrichi d'un envoi non signé de l'un des auteurs, fait à New Haven (Connecticut) en juin 1868, adressé à A. Daubrée : soit le géologue français Gabriel-Auguste Daubrée (1814-1896). First appearance of Dana's first paper.""Dana served as an instructor on a U.S. Navy vessel that sailed to the Mediterranean, where he saw Vesuvius in eruption and pursued entomological studies. His account of the eruption in a letter, published by Silliman in the Journal, was Dana’s first scientific paper. In 1834, Dana returned to Yale, where he developed a new mineral classification based on chemistry and crystallography and using Silliman’s cabinet of minerals and his own.""
