‎Pieter Bruegel de Oude (1525/30-1569) is een van de beroemdste schilders van de Nederlanden. Hij is vooral bekend omwille van zijn schilderijen over het alledaagse boerenleven, maar daarnaast maakte hij ook uitzonderlijk grafisch werk, dat al in de zestiende eeuw internationaal gelauwerd werd. De Koninklijke Bibliotheek van Belgi (KBR) voert al jarenlang onderzoek naar dat minder bekende werk van Bruegel en brengt nu voor het eerst de volledige prentencollectie samen in een tentoonstelling, ter gelegenheid van het Bruegel-jaar. De expo vindt plaats van 15 oktober 2019 tot en met 16 februari 2020 in het Paleis van Karel van Lotharingen in Brussel, dat voor deze gelegenheid opnieuw zijn deuren opent na een lange renovatie. Rond het midden van de zestiende eeuw werd Vlaanderen het internationale productie- en handelscentrum voor grafiek. Samen met zijn uitgever, Hieronymus Cock, speelde Bruegel een sleutelrol in deze bloeiperiode. De tentoonstelling focust op het unieke vakmanschap en de ondernemerskwaliteiten van beide heren en toont aan de hand van verschillende staten en edities het lange maakproces dat grafisch werk ondergaat, van ontwerptekening tot afgewerkte prent. De onderwerpen van Bruegels tekeningen en prenten zijn ontzettend rijk. Steeds weer roept hij imaginaire werelden op, bevolkt door zonderlinge figuren, en verrast hij de kijker met vele uitzonderlijke details. De luxueuze catalogus bij deze unieke tentoonstelling reproduceert de werken op ware grootte en geeft de lezers zo de kans om van heel dichtbij kennis te maken met de beroemde prenten van Bruegel. ‎On 20 September 2009 the new M-Museum Leuven (Belgium) was inaugurated with the opening of the exhibition Rogier van der Weyden 1400-1464 - Master of Passions. The starting point of the exhibition was the work of Rogier van der Weyden himself and the intention was to display and define his individual style and contribution. To demonstrate the significance of his overwhelming influence across artistic media, his own works were brought together with those of his contemporaries and followers: painters, designers, sculptors, tapestry weavers and embroiderers. His significance was reflected in the international Colloquium Rogier van der Weyden in Context, which took place on 22, 23 and 24 October 2009. It was organised by Illuminare - Centre for the Study of Medieval Art (KU Leuven), the Art History Department KU Leuven and Artes.Leuven, in conjunction with the UCL (Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve, Laboratoire d'etude des oeuvres d'art par les methodes scientifiques) and the KIK-IRPA (Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage, Belgium). ‎This book discusses the production and consumption of printed images in an urban environment in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, up to 1585. The story begins in the fifteenth century. At some point - no one knows exactly when - prints were suddenly being offered for sale in Antwerp. Initially they may have been brought from other cities by merchants and travellers, but at length the first printmaker established himself in the city. In the sixteenth century Antwerp fast developed into one of the main centres of print making in the western world. The author explores the complex way in which the printed image secured a place for itself in the urban fabric. He reconstructs the different traditions from which the print producers evolved, and explains how existing institutions in the city related to the new medium. He traces the way in which the traditional guilds tried to bring practitioners of this 'singular skill', as it was labelled in 1452, into their ranks, and shows how the government tried to gain control of the new medium. He discusses the interplay between printmakers seeking strategies to market their wares, and a public confronted with an interesting array of cheap new products.The reader is given an impression of the variety of prints produced, which have thus far received little attention in art history. Archival research has generated a good deal of detailed new information on the prices of prints, the numbers of impressions made, the costs of printing and colouring, and so forth. Printing Images in Antwerp is an exploration of the impact of print making in the sixteenth century. It contains an abundance of new information, not only for print historians but for anyone interested in cultural history.‎

‎The Print Room of the Royal Library of Belgium currently possesses roughly 700,000 independent prints, including a few hundred early' woodcuts and engravings from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, which make up one of the most important parts of the collection. In the course of time, only a small portion of these has been recorded in a systematic catalogue. One-and-a-half centuries ago, in 1857, the head curator Louis Alvin catalogued the Library's noteworthy collection of Italian niello prints. Thirty-five years later, in 1892, Max Lehrs, then head of the Dresden Print Room, published the first and only inventory of the collection of fifteenth-century northern engravings in the Royal Library's Print Room. As for the two other parts of the collection included in this book, namely the early woodcuts and the early Italian prints, this is the very first time that each has been examined as a group. Consequently, the exceptionally rich collection of 'early' prints in the Royal Library of Belgium has remained essentially unknown to many thus far. This catalogue is a first step in making the collection better known.‎

‎Peintre et graveur, Hieronymus Cock (Anvers 1518-1570) fut un des premiers artistes du nord de l'Europe a creer, avec son epouse Volcxken Diericx, une maison d'edition d'estampes. Des 1548, 'Aux Quatre Vents' publia des centaines d'eaux-fortes et de gravures. Inspirees des fresques et des tableaux de Raphael et de Bronzino, des ruines classiques et des sculptures antiques, mais aussi des dessins d'artistes septentrionaux comme Maarten van Heemskerck et Frans Floris, elles furent diffusees dans toute l'Europe, ou elles contribucrent a repandre les ideaux de beaute de la Renaissance. Ayant discerne le talent de Pieter Bruegel, Cock lui commanda une soixantaine de planches. De sa propre initiative, il realisa egalement des gravures a partir des compositions monumentales et debordantes d'imagination de Jerome Bosch. Dans ce livre, qui va de pair avec une exposition organisee a Louvain et Paris, les activites de Cock et de son epouse ont ete minutieusement reconstituees et analysees. Les auteurs veulent rendre justice a l'esprit d'entreprise des protagonistes, tout en sensibilisant le lecteur au role capital joue par l'editeur d'estampes dans l'histoire de l'art. ‎
