Eind vijftiende eeuw worden in Rome de ondergrondse ru nes van het beroemde paleis van keizer Nero ontdekt: het Domus Aurea. De muren zijn beschilderd met weelderige symmetrische versieringen, waartussen het wemelt van de bizarre dieren en fabelwezens. Dat is het begin van een nieuwe beeldtaal, die de naam 'grotesken' krijgt naar de vindplaats in 'grotachtige' ru nes. Hans Vredeman de Vries en Cornelis Floris verspreiden de grotesken via hun gedrukte ontwerpen met eindeloze variaties. De ornamentiek van de grotesken dringt in de zestiende eeuw niet alleen door tot de schilderkunst en de architectuur maar ook tot de glasschilderkunst, het edelsmeedwerk en de boekdrukkunst. Vandaag verbinden we het begrip 'grotesk' nog steeds aan het grillige, bizarre, monsterachtige maar ook aan het karikaturale en lachwekkende. Bosch en Bruegel waren met hun drollerie n de grote pioniers van het groteske in de prentkunst. James Ensor, Fred Bervoets, Ren De Coninck, Carll Cneut en anderen staan in een lange traditie van kunstenaars die zich lieten en nog steeds laten inspireren door het groteske en de grotesken. At the end of the fifteenth century, the underground ruins of the famous palace of Emperor Nero: the Domus Aurea were discovered in Rome. The walls are painted with lush symmetrical decorations, between which there are plenty of bizarre animals and fabulous creatures. That is the start of a new visual language, which is named 'grotesques' after the location in 'cave-like' ruins. Hans Vredeman de Vries and Cornelis Floris spread the grotesques through their printed designs with endless variations. In the sixteenth century, the ornamentation of grotesques penetrated not only to painting and architecture, but also to glass painting, goldsmith's work and book printing. Today we still connect the concept of 'grotesque' with the capricious, bizarre, monstrous but also with the caricatural and laughable. With their drollies, Bosch and Bruegel were the great pioneers of grotesque in printmaking. James Ensor, Fred Bervoets, Ren De Coninck, Carll Cneut and others are part of a long tradition of artists who were inspired by the grotesque and grotesque.

Ortelius staat bekend als de geograaf die in 1570 de eerste wereldatlas uitgaf, het Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Maar hij was ook de eerste die met historische kaarten uitpakte. Ortelius had dan ook een bijzondere belangstelling voor de klassieke oudheid en de Bijbelse geschiedenis. In zijn eerste editie van het Theatrum verwees hij al naar plaatsnamen in de oudheid, wat in 1587 zou resulteren in een zelfstandige publicatie: Thesaurus Geographicus. Maar ook in zijn Parergon, de bundeling van zijn historische kaarten die hij eerder in diverse edities van het Theatrum had gepubliceerd, zien we de geschiedenis van de oudheid en van de Europese gebieden die deel uitmaakten van het Romeinse Rijk in kaarten vertaald. Met behulp van zijn vermaarde museumcollectie, waaronder een uitgebreide bibliotheek en een rijke verzameling Romeinse munten, reconstrueerde Ortelius onder meer de veroveringen van Caesar in Gallie en de tochten van de antieke helden Odysseus, Aeneas en de Argonauten. In zijn teksten die de kaarten begeleidden, gaf hij telkens de nodige informatie over de bronnen die hij had geraadpleegd. Ortelius ging ook letterlijk op zoek naar de geschiedenis. Zo reisde hij naar Italie, waarvan zijn beroemde boekje Itinerarium per nonnullas Galliae Belgicae Partes getuigt. Maar ook dichterbij bezocht hij plaatsen waar de sporen van de klassieke oudheid nog zichtbaar waren, zoals Tongeren, Trier en Metz. Op het einde van zijn leven bereidde hij de publicatie van de Tabula Peutingeriana voor, een kopie van de Romeinse reiskaart uit de 3e?4e eeuw. Een van de geliefkoosde hobby?s van Ortelius was het verzamelen van munten. Hij bezat onder meer munten uit de Romeinse keizertijd. Die munten gaven voor Ortelius de geschiedenis een gezicht. In 1573 publiceerde hij Deorum dearumque capita ex antiquis numismatibus Abrahami Ortelii geographi Regis collecta. Geschiedenis en cartografie gingen bij hem hand in hand. Geografie was voor hem het oog van de geschiedenis.

The European perspective opened up markedly in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as a whole new world unfolded. Explorers, traders and diplomats committed their travelling experiences to paper in journals and reports. They sketched out their impressions of recently discovered territories, making it possible for us today to see how they viewed other cultures at that time. These travel narratives may have been embroidered with a certain degree of fantasy at times, nevertheless, they also frequently provided precise descriptions of exotic regions. They were important sources of information for cartography, which underwent an explosive evolution as a result. Navigational knowledge also grew considerably as a consequence of the traveller's urge to explore. After all, maritime expansion on a vast scale led to a need for new techniques and instruments in order to reach destinations quickly and safely. The development of cartography, in which Gerard Mercator played a pivotal role, was in turn responsible for expanding the mobility of Europeans as a whole. It was not uncommon for adventurous sixteenth-century travellers to embark on lengthy journeys as part of a trade mission or in connection with their education. One such young adventurer was Balthasar III Moretus. He made several journeys throughout Europe, including one to Italy, and kept journals of his observations on the way. Mercator: Exploring New Horizons maps out literally and figuratively this fascinating period of interplay between European travelling behaviour and the development of cartography.
