‎In June 1905, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff founded an association of artists known as the Brucke. Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, and Otto Mueller were also members for a time. Over the eight years? of their intense collective work, until the group broke up in 1913, the Brucke (Bridge) became the quintessence of German Expressionism. The 100th anniversary of the founding of the Brucke is the perfect occasion for the publication to literally put the protagonists into the picture. The theme of the over eighty paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints taken from German and international collections is the artist?s view of himself and his friends. Of special significance is the group of self-portraits by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, which have not played much of a role in previous examinations of his oeuvre. More than 120 coloured reproductions of the works are supplemented by texts on Kirchner?s portrait techniques and on the background of the artists group. ‎

‎Der "Blaue Reiter": Die Idee zweier Künstler zu einem Künstlerbuch wird innerhalb von zwei Jahren, 1911 und 1912, zum Synonym der künstlerischen Avantgarde in Deutschland. Während für die Dresdner Künstlergemeinschaft "Brücke" das Erlebnis exotischer Kunst- und Lebensformen an der Wiege des "Neuen Bildes" steht, wird für die Künstler des "Blauen Reiters" die volkstümliche Kunst des eigenen Kulturraums zum Vorbild. Vor allem die oberbayerische Hinterglasmalerei übt mit ihren einfachen Formen und klaren Farben eine nachhaltige Faszination aus. Im 1912 von Wassily Kandinsky und Franz Marc herausgegebenen "Almanach Der Blaue Reiter" sind zahlreiche Beispiele dieser Volkskunst als Zeugnisse "echter Kunst" ein Leitbild für die künstlerische Erneuerung der Gegenwart. Gabriele Münter erlernte als Erste die alte Technik bei einem Murnauer Hinterglasmaler. Sie kopierte historische Bilder, die sie ebenso eifrig sammelte. Eigene Kompositionen wurden mitunter in der Hinterglastechnik und als Leinwandbild gearbeitet. Hinterglasbilder und Heiligenfigürchen bildeten Motive ihrer Stillleben. Auch Kandinsky, Macke, Marc und Campendonk malten schließlich Hinterglasbilder, oft in geselliger Runde. Umgeben von bayerischer Volkskunst, die auch Kandinskys alter Liebe zur volkstümlichen russischen Kunst neue Nahrung bot, machte er den Heiligen Georg, vertrautes Motiv und zugleich Ortsheiliger von Moskau und Murnau, zur Verkörperung des "Blauen Reiters".‎
