German philologist and poet, professor in Breslau from 1830 to 1842. As a romantic, he devoted himself primarily to the study of folk songs and wrote love songs, children's songs and political songs, among other things. rnHe devoted himself early on to the study of Dutch language and literature, with a particular interest in Middle Dutch. He undertook numerous journeys, including to the Netherlands and Flanders (in Flanders he stayed in Antwerp, Leuven, Mechelen and Ghent, among other places). Everywhere he went, he searched scientific libraries for old literary texts and folk songs. He also wrote poems and songs in Dutch, even in Middle Dutch. He published the results of all this in his twelve-volume Horae Belgicae (published from 1830 to 1862). This included Floris ende Blancefloer (vol. 3, 1836), Carel ende Elegast (in vol. 4, 1836), Lanseloot ende die scone Sandrijn (1837), abele spelen (vol. 6, 1838) and other old texts that were unknown until then. He also published the two volumes Loverkens (in vol. 8, 1852 and vol. 12, 1862 respectively) in Horae Belgicae, containing his own love songs written in Dutch..
