(31),304,(2 blank) a. (8),64 leaves. Endpapers a bit torn. Contemp. owners name on titlepage. Internally clean. Some 90 leaves have a wormtract in inner margin, occasionally shaving and loosing some letters.‎

‎An extremely scarce early edition of the ""Aphorisms"". Not in Choulant, not in Waller and Wellcome and not in British Museum Short-Title (Italy).Hippocratic medicine was very successfull, ""The proof of their success may be found in thtat for two millenia no better work was accomplished, and often worse was done. Hippocratis medicine traversed the centuries somewhat like Aristotelian Logic,"" and if, since the nineteenth century, the errors of the physician have been seen to be more profound than those of the logician, it is because the domaine that he explored was much the more complex.""(DSB VI, p.429).The Hippocratic Oath has been taken in spirit if not in precise form by medical students for more than two thousand years. The Aphorisms, the best known work of the Hippocratic Collection, are probably genuinely Hippocratic, at least in part. They are here presented with the commentaries of Galen, both of which are in Latin translation. The well-known aphorism ""Vita brevis, ars vero longa"" (Life is short, but art is long) opens the book. (Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1). ‎

‎Cum interpretatione & commentariis Iacobi HOLLERIJ Stempani... nunc primum Desiderij IACOTIJ Vandoperani medici opera in lucem editis.. apud Guilielmum Rovillium, Lugduni, 1576. In-4 gr. (mm. 348x216), importante legatura in mz. pelle settecentesca, dorso a cordoni (restaurato) con decorazioni e titolo oro, piatti in pelle di scrofa finemente decorata a secco su assi di legno smussate lungo i lati. La ricchissima decorazione consta di una serie di cornici concentriche eseguite a rotella e ornate, dall'esterno all'interno, a palmette e arabeschi, figure di santi che sovrastano un motto a loro attribuito, personaggi entro piccoli medaglioni; al centro si riconoscono due figure umane: al piatto anteriore si tratterebbe dell'allegoria della Giustizia e a quello posteriore, forse della Castità; coppia di fermagli con aggancio sul piatto anteriore. Il volume, di pp. (32), 1130, (2, bianche), (72, di Indice ed Errata), con marca tipografica al frontespizio, è ornato da pregevoli testatine, grandi iniziali figurate e finalini, inc. su legno; testo in latino, con i titoli dei vari capitoli anche in greco.Dedicata a Enrico III, re della Gallia e di Polonia, in questa importante opera eiusdem Desiderij Iacotij Vandoperani Commentariorum ad idem opus, libri tredecim, tribus sectionibus distincti. In quibus symptomatum omnium, quae in aegris apparent, causa, vires & significationes demonstrantur". E' una edizione che riveste un'importanza notevole nella storia della medicina e tient un des premiers rangs parmi tous les commentaires qui ont été faits sur Hippocrate (così Dictionnaire historique de la médecine ancienne et moderne, III, p. 243); per la prima volta infatti è corredata del commento di Jacques Houllier, capofila dei cosiddetti ippocratici parigini, e curata da Didier Jacot, anch'egli medico. "Edizione originale".Cfr. Biographie Medicale,V, p. 295: "Cette édition a le mérite d'une savante critique du texte et elle est accompagnée d'excellentes remarques. C'est un ouvrage fort important" - Choix de Olschki,VII, p. 3027: "Jacques Houllier d'Estampes (latinizzato Hollerius), (mort 1562), celèbre medecin francais; importantes sont ses études sur les auteurs anciens de médecine". Ippocrate, grande medico greco (Coo 460 ca. a.C. - Larissa 377 ca. a.C.), pose le basi della medicina scientifica. Svolse la maggior parte della sua attività a Coo, dove già esisteva una scuola medica che ebbe da lui grandissima fama. Le opere e l'insegnamento suo portarono al superamento della medicina sacerdotale e magica e all'avvento di una scienza medica fondata sull'osservazione e sul ragionamento. Cfr. Diz. Bereits während seiner Zeit in Frankreich hatte Zwinger, wie er im Vorwort schreibt, Pläne zur Herausgabe eines Hippokrates-Kommentar geschmiedet. Offenbar konnte er sich dazu erst nach dem Tode von Conrad Gessner (1565) entschliessen. - Durchgehend leicht gebräunt und fleckig. Zu Beginn mit Wasserrand. Titel mehrfach gestempelt. Einbandrücken fachgerecht restauriert.‎
