‎En 1880, il est sollicité par le Comité météorologique international pour préparer l'Atlas international des nuages, un travail réalisé en collaboration avec Léon Teisserenc de Bort. De nombreuses autres observations ont ensuite été incorporées dans Les bases de la météorologie dynamique (1907), auxquelles Teisserenc de Bort a de nouveau collaboré. Ses articles sur les centres d'action de l'atmosphère marquèrent un grand progrès dans les prévisions saisonnières.‎
