Published for the 200 hundred years of the Conspiracy of Minas Gerais, which culminated in the martyrdom of Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, better known as Tiradentes, this book provides a lengthy description of it while also paying tribute to the French revolution which happened later that year. "The American Independence example produced great repercussion in some European cities where Brazilian students resided. A group of these students at the University of Coimbra are said to have committed themselves to fight for the political emancipation of Brazil as soon as they returned home. From France, in October 1786, José Joaquim da Maia e Barbalho, a student of medicine born in Rio de Janeiro, began to exchange letters with the North-American politician Thomas Jefferson, who represented the United States in Paris. In March of the following year, they met in the French town of Nîmes. The Brazilian student exposed his fellow countrymen's desire and tried to gain support from the diplomat... As we shall see ahead, this meeting in Southern France would turn out to be the object of special investigation during the inquiries which began in Vila Rica in 1789." (p. 21)‎
