Wrappers slightly soiled. 16 pp. including 3 plates with leaves of gold on the plates showing the effects of the electrical discharge through various arrangements of the gold as the gold imitates metallic conductors fixed along the masts of ships.‎

‎Extremely scarce. The work relates further experiments as did the authors famous work ""Observations on the Effects of Lightning on floating Bodies..."" 1823, as it contains 2 more plates with leaves of gold, showing the ways of the electrical discharge.In 1835 he received the Copley gold medal from the Royal Society for his papers on the laws of electricity of high tension, and in 1839 he was chosen to deliver the Bakerian lecture.In 1820, William Snow Harris invented a system of fixed lightning conductor plates which were routed along the aft side of the mast down through the hull to the copper sheathing on the bottom of the ship. Harris spent the next twenty-five years trying to persuade the British Admiralty to test his system and require its installation. For years, old prejudices against lightning conductors, notions of economy, and bureaucratic suspicions of technological innovation frustrated his efforts. It took a successful trial installation on eleven ships, an extensive campaign by Harris to publicize the extent of lightning damage to the navy, the favorable recommendations of two study committees, and administrative changes in the Admirality before the Royal Navy finally adopted the Harris conductors in 1842.Not in Ronalds. - Not in Weaver. - Not in WorldCat.‎

‎Richard Morton (1637-1698) était un médecin anglais qui fut le premier à affirmer que les tubercules étaient toujours présents dans la maladie tuberculeuse des poumons. À l'époque de Morton, cette maladie débilitante était appelée consomption , ou par son nom grec de phtisie . La reconnaissance des nombreux symptômes possibles de cette infection appartenant à une même maladie ne se fit que dans les années 1820 et c'est JL Schönlein en 1839 qui introduisit le terme "tuberculose". ‎L'Amérique ouvrière de 1900. — L'autobiographie de Mary Harris Jones (1837-1930), dite « Mother » Jones, est parue pour la première fois en 1925, à Chicago. Publiée par les Éditions Ouvrières en 1952, puis par François Maspero en 1977, c'est un classique de l'histoire du mouvement ouvrier américain. Mary Harris Jones a vécu l'industrialisation des États-Unis et le développement de ce qui devint la première puissance capitaliste. Elle apporte donc sur les années 1870-1920 un témoignage de première main. Institutrice, ouvrière, militante syndicale, elle ne subit pas cette période, elle en fut une protagoniste, au même titre que des milliers de militants ouvriers qui s'efforcèrent de protéger les intérêts de leur classe et qui combattirent pour un monde meilleur. Révoltée par l'exploitation et la sauvagerie sur lesquelles se construisait la fortune des Rockefeller et autres Vanderbilt, elle fut pendant près de cinquante ans de toutes les luttes des travailleurs, en particulier de celles des mineurs. Son socialisme, instinctif plus que scientifique, même mêlé de foi religieuse, la faisait se placer en toute occasion du côté des travailleurs. De la manifestation du premier mai 1886 à Chicago à la Première Guerre mondiale et à la Révolution bolchevique, toute son action, tous ses discours sont la marque d'un sens de classe chevillé au corps et à l'esprit. Elle sut aussi, par son exemple et ses talents d'oratrice, insuffler aux travailleurs auxquels elle s'adressait la détermination et le courage qui lui permettaient de résister aussi bien aux patrons et à leurs agents, à leur violence dans la répression, qu'aux bureaucrates syndicaux et à leurs tentatives de division de la classe ouvrière. Maman Jones est un témoignage majeur sur le développement du capitalisme, de la classe ouvrière et du mouvement ouvrier américains, sur ce que furent les luttes et les militants de cette période. ‎
