This book features around 200 photographs and will show the most striking photography that tells universal, timeless stories of human existence, such as departure, journey and arrival, and themes like family, loss and love. Among the hundreds of images are iconic as well as unknown photos by, among many others, Lewis Hine, Chien-Chi Chang, Abbas, Robert de Hartogh, Wang Fuchun, Dorothea Lange, Stephan Vanfleteren, Ara Gu?ler, Leonard Freed, Ata Kand and Ishiuchi Miyako. ‎Based on six years of study done by the Bosch Research and Conservation Project, this book represents the most comprehensive study ever done of the materiality of Hieronymus Bosch's paintings. In het verleden hebben de kunsthistorici zich vooral toegespitst op de onderwerpen en betekenissen van Bosch' werken, terwijl aan aspecten als schildertechniek, de medewerking van een atelier en de bewaringstoestand van de nog bestaande schilderijen aanzienlijk minder aandacht werd besteed. Sinds 2010 bestudeert het Bosch Research and Conservation Project de werken aan de hand van moderne onderzoeksmethoden. Het team heeft Bosch' bewaard gebleven schilderijen zo grondig mogelijk gedocumenteerd met infraroodreflectografie en digitale macrofotografie in ultrahoge resolutie, zowel bij infrarood als bij zichtbaar licht. Rontgenfoto's werden gedigitaliseerd en de volledige fotografische documentatie werd in een coregistratieproces verwerkt. Dat alles, samen met de microscopische studie van de schilderijen, verschafte het team de mogelijkheid om uitvoerige en kritische onderzoeksrapporten te schrijven over de techniek en de conditie van de werken. Hun bevindingen, die in dit buitengewone boek voor het eerst worden gepubliceerd, zullen bijdragen tot een beter inzicht in het oeuvre van Bosch. In the past, scholars have traditionally focused on the subjects and meanings of Hieronymus Bosch's works, whereas issues of painting technique, workshop participation, and condition of extant pictures has received considerably less attention. Since 2010, the Bosch Research and Conservation Project has been studying these works using modern methods. The team has documented as thoroughly as possible Bosch's extant paintings with infraredreflectography and ultra high-resolution digtal macro photography, both in infrared and visible light. X-radiographs have been digitized, and the complete photographic documentation processed via co-registration. Together with microscopic study of the paintings, all of this has enabled the team to write extensive and critical research reports describing the techniques and condition of the works, published in this extraordinary volume for the first time, all of which can further inform our understanding of Bosch's oeuvre. Luuk Hoogstede is a paintings conservator at SRAL, Maastricht. Ron Spronk is professor in art history at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada and Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands. ‎In het boek 'Pelgrimstekens op Perkament' staat de vraag centraal: waarom vertonen laatmiddeleeuwse boeken zo vaak sporen van pelgrimstekens? Op basis van een honderdtwintigtal boeken, grotendeels ongepubliceerd materiaal, wordt een nieuwe blik geworpen op de functie die bedevaartssouvenirs en religieuze boeken vervulden in het dagelijks leven. Boeken zijn bewaarplaatsen voor allerlei aandenkens, ook in de late Middeleeuwen. Bezitters naaiden bedevaartssouvenirs aan het perkament van religieuze boeken. Verluchters schilderden pelgrimstekens en andere devotionalia in de marges, zo waarheidsgetrouw dat het lijkt alsof ze daar zijn ingenaaid. De middeleeuwse boeken worden nu bewonderd om hun schoonheid, maar ze hadden ook een praktisch nut als instrument dat het lichamelijk en geestelijk welzijn van de eigenaar moest waarborgen. Boeken met ingenaaide bedevaartssouvenirs laten zien hoe de bezitter het boek gebruikte, welke teksten hij het meest las, maar ook wie pelgrimstekens verzamelde. De nageschilderde pelgrimstekens die vooral in rijk verluchte, kostbare manuscripten zijn afgebeeld, vullen de kennis over de originele insignes aan. De margemotieven vervulden in het boek vooral een decoratieve en structurerende rol. Daaraan kon de verluchter desgewenst een extra betekenis toevoegen door een relatie te leggen met de omlijste tekst of miniatuur. In het boek 'Pelgrimstekens op perkament' wordt de betekenis van bedevaartssouvenirs belicht aan de hand van de boeken waarin ze verschijnen.‎

‎Summary Late medieval books served as treasure chests for all kinds of religious keepsakes, notably small metal badges. Devotees sewed these religious badges and pilgrimage souvenirs to the parchment of their treasured devotional books and manuscript illuminators depicted silver en gilt badges in the margins as if they are sewn to the pages. Medieval manuscripts are often admired for their esthetic qualities, but many of them also served a practical use as instruments for the physical and mental wellbeing of the owners and their families. Manuscripts and incunabula containing metal badges illustrate how the owners used their books, which texts they favored, but also who collected badges and why. The depicted badges that only appear in richly illuminated and expensive manuscripts expand the knowledge of these metal objects that have been passed down in small numbers only. The painted motifs that have a more decorative and structuring role in the book fulfilled different functions than the original badges. 'Silver Saints' discusses the religious life of lay people in the late Middle Ages and the meaning of badges in books, both the painted motifs in beautifully decorated manuscripts and many traces of original badges.
