Summary These volumes present a selection of papers delivered in Paris at the XV International Congress of the Soci t Internationale pour l' tude de la Philosophie M di vale, August 22-26, 2022. The appearance of the term radix positionis in medieval debates inspired the contributors to investigate whether there was something that could be considered radical thought in the Middle Ages and, if so, what the roots of this radical thought were in the different philosophical traditions in various geographical, cultural, religious, and linguistic contexts (Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Latin). Medieval philosophy often engaged in a quest for origins, but it could also be radical in its methodology or in its attitude when it refused any compromise on its principles or basic concepts, be they innovative or rediscovered. Radicalism could be conceived as extremism in pushing a hypothesis, procedure, or line of inquiry to its limits, leading to extreme positions. Radical thought could mean being intellectually inflexible on principles, obstinate in embracing theses that broke from tradition, progressive but also extremist. The contributions in these volumes thus analyse case-studies of doctrinal conflict, dogmatic struggle, and condemnation by religious or academic institutions, presenting examples of both intellectual courage and philosophical intransigence. Summary This book collects papers presented at two multi-disciplinary gatherings which sought to examine concepts belonging to the semantic field of religious belief. The collection sets out from the observation that the relevant terms are ambiguous and equivocal, and indeed that this ambiguity persists in the scholarly literature in the humanities. It is therefore important to historicise these terms adequately and to clarify their development and transformation over time. This involves a sustained engagement with key discourses - logic, history of religion, epistemology, political history - of significant intellectual heterogeneity. Platonism fundamentally informs classical and patristic Christian reflections as well as the thought of their medieval heirs. It carries with it a tension between 'opinion' and supra-rational certitude which is exploited by Christian thinkers up to and including scholastic theologians. These thinkers insist above all on the existential dimension of a certitude which seeks to establish a privileged link with the divine. It involves the attempt to harmonise the ritual and social aspects of religious practice with the individual urge towards transcendence, a quest which has been bequeathed to modernity and still largely defines the nature of contemporary Western social engagement with religion. Issu de deux colloques pluridisciplinaires qui se proposaient d' tudier les notions relevant du champ s mantique de la croyance religieuse, ce volume part du constat que ces termes sont le plus souvent quivoques, ce qui p se encore sur les recherches en sciences sociales. Il fallait rendre ces concepts leur historicit , et montrer comment la notion de foi se constitue progressivement au cours d'une histoire qui est faite d'allers et retours entre des champs intellectuels h t rog nes (de la logique la religion, et de l' pist mologie la politique). Robert Holcot (? 1349), active at Oxford in the years following William of Ockham?s departure, has been the subject of renewed interest partly due to the exceptional success of his work on Wisdom, a bestseller until the 17th century. This volume offers an analysis of his unedited theological questions, a critical edition of which has been a desideratum for many years. This varied corpus, hitherto mistakenly considered to consist solely of ?quodlibetic questions?, sheds light on the scholarly practices of the network of theologians who, around Holcot, disputed these questions at Oxford in the 1330s, at the origin of the nominalist turn in theology. Here we see at first hand the shifting boundary between secular knowledge and religious beliefs, the intertwining of scholarly rationality and scholastic reason at work in the medieval university. Several texts are published here: the Introitus in Mattheum, the Determinationes II and IV, question 7 of the Quodlibet B on the halo of the doctors and two short questions on the guardian angels.
