‎Summary During the Renaissance and throughout the Baroque and Classical periods, musical production was linked to patronage. There are essentially two types of patronage. The first relates to political institutions, to public life, and aims to promote musical events that highlight the wealth and power of the patron in the eyes of rival courts and subjects ? hence the birth of the court chapels. The second type belongs to the private sphere, in which the patron, of noble birth and as such in possession of high moral and intellectual virtues, has a discriminating artistic sensibility - hence the promotion of chamber music activities, the collecting of rare and valuable musical instruments, and the compilation and collection of musical manuscripts, possibly in deluxe or personalized copies. This musical production system lasted until the middle of the nineteenth century, when the advent of capitalism and the rise of the bourgeois class caused the decline of patronage. This book focuses on the various aspects of music patronage in Italy from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. ‎Speculum musicae, vol. 5: Musica e societ in Umbria tra Medioevo e Rinascimento ‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1999 Cloth binding with dustjacket, 387 pages, 21 x 26 cm, Italian. *As new. ISBN 9782503508153.‎

‎This volume, which also draws on novel methodologies of interdisciplinary research and sociological analysis, is an important contribution to our knowledge of medieval and renaissance music in the main towns of Umbria (Assisi, Perugia, Foligno, Spoleto, Todi, Orvieto, Citt di Castello, Gubbio, Gualdo Tadino and Spello) - a broad and complex phenomenon that has only recently been reconstructed in any detail. Within this highly composite geographical area, loosely held together by the Church, the study outlines the historical development of musical patronage, examines the role played by individual personalities, institutions and musicians and establishes possible links between these various sources (including abundant iconographical material and contemporary chronicles), this valuable survey focuses specifically on the development of patronage among the more important families, the splendour of certain cathedral chapels, the foundation of academies, the promotion of musical composition and the musicians' labour market. As such it offers a wide-ranging vision that greatly enriches our knowledge of the history of Umbria.‎
