‎SPANISH-FRENCH ALLIANCE - DUPONT (DE NEMOURS, P.S.)‎

Reference : 17333

‎La pacte de la famille et les conventions subsequentes, entre la France et l'Espagne. Avec des observations sur chaque article.‎

‎Paris, de l'Imprimerie nationale, juillet 1790. (4), 152 pp. 8vo. Modern boards. Schelle 41; Kress B.1831; Einaudi 1671; Martin & Walter 12155; not in Goldsmiths. First edition. Dupont de Nemours here examines the Family Compact: the Spanish-French alliance which was first concluded in 1733 and repeatedly renewed over the century. Dupont analyses the treaty article by article: the text of the treaty printed left, Dupont's observations and comments on the right.Spain invoked this particular treaty and called upon the French king after an incident with British troops in the far Pacific. Louis XVI and his ministers were inclined to send the help requested, even at the risk of war; but the National Assembly, confronting diplomatic questions for the first time, spurned the Spanish request. A national, representative regime did not recognize family ties between ruling houses as fit basis for international agreements, much less action (W. Doyle, The Oxford History of the French Revolution, pp. 164-165). ‎

‎"FARADAY, MICHAEL. - THE FIRST ELECTRIC MOTOR - INTRODUCING ""LINES OF FORCE"" AND THE UNIVERSE OF ""FIELDS"" (FRENCH EDITION).‎

Reference : 43750

(1821)

‎Sur les Mouvemens électro-magnétiques et la théorie du magnétisme. (Traduit par M. Anatole-Riffault). + (André-Marie Ampere et Felix Savary:) Notes relatives au Mémoire de M. Faraday.‎

‎(Paris, Crochard, 1821). No wrappers. In: ""Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago."", tome 18 (Septembre Cahier). Pp. 337-443. (Entire issue offered). Faraday's paper: pp. 337-370 a. 2 folded engraved plates (showing the experimental apparatus). Ampère & Savary's Notes: pp. 370-379. Clean and fine.‎

‎First French edition of Faraday's famous paper ""On some new Electro-Magnetical Motion, and on the Theory of Magnetism. By Michael Faraday, Chemical Assistant in the Royal Institution. (1821)"", recording one of the most influential discoveries in physics in the 19th Century, as Faraday here, as the very first, showed how to CONVERT THE ELECTRICAL AND MAGNETIC FORCES INTO CONTINUAL MECHANICAL MOVEMENT, thus creating the first electric motor, using the principle of electromagnetic rotation. In the first paper he introduced for the first time the concept of ""LINE OF FORCE"" and hereby deliniating ""a picture of the universe as consisting of fields of various types, one that was more subtle, flexible, and useful than the purely mechanical picture of Galileo and Newton. The FIELD UNIVERSE was to be recognized with Maxwell half a century later and with Einstein, after an interval of another halfcentury.""(Asimov).""Ever since Hans Christian oersted's announcement of the discovery of electromagnetism in the summer of 1820, editors of scientific journals had been inundated with articles on the phenomenon. Theories to explain it had multiplied, and the net effect was confusion. Were all the effects reported real ? Did the theories fit the facts ? It was to answer these questions that Phillips turned to Faraday and asked him to review the experiments and theories of the past months and separate truth from fiction,...Faraday agreed to to undertake a short historical survey...His entusiasm was aroused in September 1821, when he turned to the investigation of the peculiar nature of the magnetic force created by an electrical current. Oersted had spoken of the ""electrical conflict"" surrounding the wiree and had noted that ""this conflict performs circles"".....Yet as he experimented he saw precisely what was happening. Using a small magnetic needle to map the pattern of magnetic force, he noted that oneof the poles of the needle turned in a circle as it was carried around the wire. He immediately realized that a single magnetic pole would rotate unceasingly around a current-carrying wire so long as the current flowed. He then set about devising an instrument to illustrate this effect. His paper ""On some new Electro-Magnetical Motion, and on the Theory of Magnetism"" appeared in the 21 October 1821 issue of the ""Quarterly Journal of Science"" (The paper offered in the first French edition). It records the first conversion of electrical into mechanical energy. It also contained the first notion of the line of force.""(DSB IV, pp. 533).‎

‎First French edition of ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTENT CONTRIBUTIONS EVER MADE TO CHEMICAL SCIENCE, as Davy here outlined a theory of mass action, forcast the use of electricity in atomic disintegration and announced the isolation by electrolytic methods of two new elements, sodium and potassium. He used the most powerful electric battery of the time, a voltaic pile, invented 1800 by Volta.""Humphrey Davy...was among the first to investigate the decomposition of water. In 1806 he delivered a Bakerian Lecture (the paper offered here in the French version) before the Royal Society of London ""On some chemical agencies of electricity"" (1807), which pointed out several fallacies in the theory of electrolysis. Davy's experiments on the chemical effects of electrical currents on substances, causing their decomposition, led to his discovery of several new elements: potassium (1807), sodium (1807), barium (1808), calcium (1808), and boron (1808)"" (Milestone of Science No. 52) - Davy's first Bakerian Lecture won a Prize from Napoleon, even though France and England were at War. - Partington vol. ‎First appearance in French of these importent papers. publication of which at once gave him European reputation. The first paper combated Rumford's view that the circulation of heat in fluids is by convection only. Second paper is the French translation of the first of the 5 seminal papers which appeared under the general title ""Experimental Essays on the constitution of mixed Gases"" on the Force of steam or vapor etc...""(published 1801-3). The paper expresses the generalisation that the maximum density of a vapour in contact with its liquid remains the same whether other gases be present or not and the view that the particles of every kind of elastic fluid are elastic only with regard to those of their own kind, the LAW OF PARTIAL PRESSURES. ‎GONON, ENNEMOND. - THE FRENCH OPTICAL TELERAPH.‎

Reference : 52193

(1845)

‎Des Télégraphes Aériens et électriques. Questions mises a la portée de tout le Monde.‎

‎Paris, A. Sirou, 1845. Nice contemp. full embossed cloth. Gilt spine. Stamps on title-page. A paperlabel pasted on upper part of spine. Lithographed frontispiece with handcolouring. (6),107 pp. Internally clean and fine, printed on good paper (papier vélin).‎

‎First edition describing the French optical telegraph system, the mechanical and optical telegraph system developed by Ennemond Gonon. This system was described by Gonon as a new telegraph for day and night, universal and perpetual, and for all languages. Mechanical-optical telegraphy had been invented by French engineer Claude Chappe in the 1790s. Gonon's system was intended to improve on Chappe's, but the rise of the electric telegraph developed by Morse in the 1840s, meant Gonon's system was never built.‎

Reference : 44144

(1863)

+ 512 pp. a. 3 large folded engraved plates. Kirchhoff's papers: pp. 5-45 a. pp. 396-411. 5 plates belongs to K's papers, 4 showing spectra and 1 plate (double page) depicts the famous spectroscope invented by K. and used by K. and Bunsen in their importent analysis of the spectra of the elements.‎

‎First edition in French of Kirchhoff's milestone papers on the interpretation of the dark D lines - noticed by Fraunhofer in 1814 - in the spectrum of the sun, the papers that inspired Max Planck to his theory of quanta (1900). The papers are the French translations of his papers published in Abhandl. d. königl. Akad. d. Wissenscchaften in Berlin in 1861 and 1862.In the course of his preparatory work in the autumn of 1859, Kirchhoff made an unexpected observation. It had long been known that the dark D lines, noticed in the solar spectrum by Fraunhofer (1814), coincided with the yellow lines emitted by flames containing sodium.....Kirchhoff's unexpected discovery was that if the intensity of the solar spectrum increased above a certain limit, the dark D lines were made much darker by the interrposition of the sodium flame. He instantly felt that he had got hold of ""something fundamental"", even though he was at a loss to suggest an explanation. On the day following the surprising observation, Kirchhoff found the the correct interpretation, which wass soon confirmed by new experiments: a substance capable of emittiing a certain spectral line has a strong absorptive power for the same line....The dark D lines in the solar spectrum could accordingly be ascribed to absorption by a solar atmosphere containing sodium. Immense prospects thus opened up of ascertaining the chemical composition of the sun and other stars from the study of their optical spectra. A few more weeks sufficed for Kirchhoff to elaborate a quantitative theory of the relationship between emissive and absorptive poweer.""(DSB VII, pp. 381-82).PMM, 278 b. - Barchas, 1169-70 - Sparrow, 117 - Horbli, 59 - Dibner, 153 (the note).‎
