‎First appearance of Frege's important paper on the role of axioms in mathematical theories, describing the correct way to demonstrate consistency and independence results for such axioms.The two papers was Frege's response to Hilbert's ""Grundlagen der Geometrie"" which inaugurated the famous Frege-Hilbert Controversy. ""Hilbert's lecture [Grundlagen der Geometrie] inspired a sharp reaction from his contemporary Gottlob Frege, who found both Hilbert's understanding of axioms, and his approach to consistency and independence demonstrations, virtually incomprehensible and at any rate seriously flawed. Frege's reaction is first laid out in his correspondence with Hilbert from December 1899 to September 1900, and subsequently in two series of essays (both entitled ""On the Foundations of Geometry"") published in 1903 and 1906. Hilbert was never moved by Frege's criticisms, and did not respond to them after 1900. Frege, for his part, was never convinced of the reliability of Hilbert's methods, and held until the end that the latter's consistency and independence proofs were fatally flawed.""(SEP). ""Frege felt that his view represented a traditional understanding of this notion, and that Hilbert's departure from this understanding led to a confusion about axioms that undermined many of the sorts of results, in particular, the independence of the axioms of geometry, that Hilbert saw as major mathematical achievements. In the preface of the ""Principia Mathematica"" Russell and Whitehead state that ""In all questions of logical analysis our chief debt is to Frege"" (p. VIII). His influence on 20th century philosophy has been deeply profound, especially in the English speaking countries from the middle of the 20th century and onwards"" in this period most of his works were translated into English for the first time.The philosophical papers of Frege were published in Germany in scholarly journals, which were barely read outside of German speaking countries. ‎This set comprises the entire ""Logische Untersuchungen"" in the first English language translations. In the foreword to ""Compound Thoughts"", the translator notes: ""This article, entitled ""Logische Untersuchungen. Dritter Teil: Gedankenfüge"", was published in the ""Beiträge zur Philosophie des deutschen Idealismus, III (1923), 36-51. The first two parts of these ""logical investigations"" were ""Der Gedanke"" (Beiträge I (1819), trans. ""The Thought"" in MIND LXV (1956) ) and ""Die Verneinung"" (Beiträge I (1919), trans. ""Negation"" in Geach and Black (ed.) ""Translations from the Philosophical Writings of Gottlob Frege.""). The three articles that constitute the Logical Investigations are some of the most important, influential and widely discussed of Frege's philosophical papers. In 1875 the entire ""Logical Investigations"" appeared together in English translation for the first time. It was Frege's wish that these three articles were viewed as a whole and published together under the title of ""Logische Untersuchungen"", now considered a work of the utmost importance. These three volumes also comprise many other articles by Frege in the first English translations (in Translations from the Philosophical Writings of Gottlob Frege) as well as original contributions by P.T. ‎The rare first edition with a handwritten presentation-inscription from Frege (""Freundschaftlichst/ überreicht vom/ Verfasser."") of this pioneering work of modern logic, which constitutes the starting point of analytic philosophy, of the philosophy of mathematics, and of logicism. This cornerstone of modern logic was pivotal to the development of the two main disciplines: the foundation of mathematics and the foundation of philosophy, and with it, Frege founded the discipline of logicism. The work profoundly influenced Russell and Wittgenstein, who both used Frege's ""The Foundations of Arithmetic"" as a steppingstone for their own work (e.g. In the preface of the ""Principia Mathematica"" Russell and Whitehead state that ""In all questions of logical analysis our chief debt is to Frege"" (p. Il est en outre considéré comme l'un des plus importants représentants du logicisme. C'est à la suite de son ouvrage Les Fondements de l'arithmétique, où il tente de dériver l'arithmétique de la logique, que Russell lui a fait parvenir le paradoxe qui porte son nom. Néanmoins Frege n'entendait nullement réduire le raisonnement mathématique à sa seule dimension logique. Son idéographie visait à associer sur la même page, et de manière explicite, le contenu mathématique (ligne horizontale de la page) et la structure logique (ligne verticale). - En 1873, Frege obtient son doctorat sous la direction d'Ernst Christian Julius Schering, avec une thèse intitulée Ueber eine geometrische Darstellung der imaginären Gebilde in der Ebene (Sur une représentation géométrique des formes imaginaires dans le plan), dans laquelle il vise à résoudre des problèmes fondamentaux de géométrie comme, par exemple, donner une interprétation mathématique des points infiniment distants (imaginaires) de la géométrie projective. (source : Wikipedia) - Ole Christensen Rømer (ou Römer, ou Rmer) (1644-1710) est un astronome danois, qui a travaillé à l'Observatoire de Paris dès 1671. Il fit l'hypothèse que la lumière avait une vitesse finie, précisant qu'il fallait 22 minutes à la lumière pour parcourir une distance égale au diamètre de l'orbite de la Terre. À son époque, ce diamètre n'était pas connu avec précision, et l'on sait maintenant que la lumière met un peu plus de 16 minutes pour parcourir le diamètre de l'orbite terrestre et non 22 minutes. Son calcul lui permit néanmoins de donner une vitesse de la lumière de 220 000 kilomètres par seconde, valeur à 26,5 % près de celle fixée actuellement (299 792,458 km/s), même si nous l'arrondissons souvent 3 ×105 km/s. This neglet has been attributed to Frege's repulsive symbolism. (See Cajori: A History of Mathematical Notations, paragraph 687). Modern notation in logic originates mainly from Peano's system.‎

Informations, Analyses - Bernard Bolzano (5 octobre 1781 18 décembre 1848), de son nom complet Bernhard Placidus Johann Nepomuk Bolzano, est un mathématicien, logicien, philosophe et théologien né et mort à Prague. Fils dune germanophone et dun émigré dItalie en Bohême, alors dans lEmpire dAutriche, Bolzano a rédigé toutes ses uvres en allemand. L'influence de ses ouvrages philosophiques est importante, tout comme ses découvertes en mathématiques. Il a donné son nom à deux théorèmes. - Bolzano est souvent considéré comme un des fondateurs de la logique moderne. Dans sa Théorie de la science de 1837, il essaie de fournir des fondements logiques à toutes les sciences, construites à partir d'abstractions, d'objets abstraits, d'attributs, de constructions, de démonstrations, de liens La plupart de ces tentatives retracent ses travaux précédents concernant la relation objective entre les conséquences logiques (les choses telles qu'elles se produisent) et notre perception purement subjective de ces conséquences (notre façon d'aborder les évènements). Il se rapproche ici de la philosophie des mathématiques, comme dans ses Beiträge de 1810. Pour Bolzano, nous n'avons aucune certitude quant aux vérités, ou supposées comme telles, de la nature ou des mathématiques, et c'est justement le rôle des sciences, pures comme appliquées, que de trouver une justification des vérités (ou des lois) fondamentales, qui se trouvent le plus souvent en contradiction avec nos intuitions.
