Après la mort de Pieter Paul Rubens en 1640, plusieurs monarques et nobles attendaient avec impatience la vente publique de ses trésors artistiques. Tableaux achevés et inachevés, stocks de copies, mais aussi ?uvres exclusives de sa collection de maîtres italiens et anciens séduisent de nombreux connaisseurs. Des envoyés et des représentants se précipitèrent à Anvers. Un inventaire français (« Spécification des peintures trouvées à la maison mortuaire de feu messire Pierre Pavl RVbens, chevalier, &c ») était déjà imprimé à l'automne 1640 et le roi anglais Charles Ier reçut même une traduction anglaise. Du vivant de Rubens, la demande pour ses ?uvres était élevée, mais l'intérêt pour les peintures du maître resta vif en Allemagne et à l'étranger dans les années qui suivirent sa mort.
