London, Saunders and Otley, 1836, 4°(33 x 26,5 cm), IX, 17 pp., 12 engraved plates, contemporary green half cloth, gilt lettering to spine, marbled boards.
First edition. The illustrations are beautiful compositions of outline drawings, a style very popular at this time, especially in Germany (for ex. by Moritz Retzsch). The text of the ballad is the more modern version, and differs somewhat from that in Percy's Reliques. Some slight foxing especially to the plates, binding somewhat rubbed, top and foot of spine with small chip, but in all a good copy of this uncommon book (COPAC records only three copies). Very little is known of Franklins life and work. Although a famous illustrator in the mid-nineteenth century (he rivaled even Cruikshank), he was almost forgotten at the turn of the century. Recent research by J. Buchanan-Brown (Early Victorian illustrated books: Britain, France, and Germany, 1820-1860. London, 2005) and several articles about Franklins life and work (among them a first comprehensive list of books illustrated by Franklin) by Simon Cooke in The Victorian Web threw some new light on his life and his craft.
38cm x 28cm. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 54326731
A lovely copy of this First Edition. Original red blind embossed boards with bevelled edges and gilt decoration and titles to the spine. A touch of marking, but overall in excellent condition. Internally, a good, clean copy, with light foxing and marking to the pages. Gift inscription to Hélené, the wife of Prince Roger de Podenas (an Indre Loire dignitary). After and engraved title, there are 13 engraved text leaves, and 12 engraved leaves, each plated with a printed (titled) paper guard. Complete. The book has been recently restored, so the perfect binding is perfect once more ! (Perhaps the most inaccurate bookbinding term, this style of binding is notorious for its falling apart as the glue disintegrates. A very nice copy. The tissue guards include The merciless servant; The lord of the vineyard; The wicked husbandmen; The faithful servant; The ten virgins; The sheep and the goats; The good samaritan; The prodigal son; Dives and Lazarus & The good shepherd. illustrations are engraved by F. E. Becker's patented process. 38cm x 28cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 54326731
