‎Paris, chez l’auteur ; Béchet jeune, 1821. In-4 (275 x 210 mm), XI pp., 269 pp., 1 p. n. ch. et 13 ff. n. ch. (explication des planches). Basane racinée, chiffre doré sur le plat supérieur, dos lisse orné de caissons à croisillons dorés et d’un fer maritime, pièce de titre rouge, tranches mouchetées, reliure restaurée, tache en marge inférieure, petites rousseurs éparses (reliure de l’époque). ‎


‎Première édition française. Elle réunit les travaux fondateurs de Fox publiés à Londres en 1803 et 1806, traduits par Joseph-Jean-François Lemaire (1782-1834), chirurgien-dentiste du roi de Bavière et auteur du Dentiste des dames. Cet ouvrage est illustré de 23 planches lithographiées dessinées par Delorieux, représentant l’évolution de la dentition, différents cas d’irrégularité, des caries et diverses affections dentaires, ainsi que des exemples d’opération. "This is the first book to illustrate diseases of the teeth" (Morton). Fils d’un dentiste du même nom, Joseph Fox (1775-1816) fit des études de médecine au Guy's Hospital de Londres et donna à partir de 1799 une série de conférences pionnières sur la dentisterie. Ses deux premiers ouvrages, The natural history of the human teeth (1803) et The history and treatment of diseases of the teeth (1806) ont joué un rôle fondamental pour la science dentaire anglaise, après les travaux de John Hunter et de Robert Blake à la fin du XVIIIe siècle.
