‎Pieter Coecke (1502-1550) genoot in het Europa van de renaissance grote faam en werkte voor de rijkste en belangrijkste opdrachtgevers van zijn tijd, onder wie keizer Karel V, Frans I van Frankrijk, Hendrik VIII van Engeland en Cosimo de?Medici. Hoewel hij vooral bekendheid geniet om zijn prachtige wandtapijten, die deze luxueuze en monumentale textielkunst tot ongekende hoogten brachten, was hij ook een volleerd meester in andere kunstvormen.
