‎First edition of Forster's own account on the second of Cook's voyages where he became the naturalist. When Joseph Banks withdrew at the last moment as naturalist on Cook's second voyage, Forster and his son were appointed to fill the vacant position. In July 1772 they set sail on the Resolution, returning to England in July 1775. During a stop in Cape Town, Forster engaged Anders Sparrman to act as his assistant. Both the Forsters kept detailed diaries of everything they saw on the voyage, and made extensive collections of both natural history specimens and artifacts. On his return Forster published the offered work.""At the time of his death he was called the 'patriarch' of geography in Europe and was widely recognised as one of the most able naturalists. His influence on German science and scholarship was considerable. There was not one continent to which he did not devote some scholarly work."" (Captain Cook Society).Sabin, 25140.‎

‎New York, William Hepburn, 1931. First and only edition. Hardcover, publisher's burgundy cloth. 12 pp. (Introduction and List of Plates), 183 plates. In-folio, 25.5 x 33.5 cm. llustrated with photographs, drawings and plans. Pink stamp of the Publicações Pan-Americanas, a Brazilian company which imported many technical and faculty books from the United States to Brazil, on the title page. Some rubbing on the sides of the front cover, spine badly worn. Light foxing inside with no damage to the plates. Paper block is firm and sturdy. Frank Joseph Forster (1886-1948) was an American architect who designed homes in the style of French Provincial architecture during the early 20th century. His architectural designs recreating French chateaus and English Tudor homes often featured turrets. He built several homes in Connecticut including a home in Greenwich, Connecticut that was home of singer Diana Ross. In 1927 and 1929 Forster won the Architectural League Medal for Domestic architecture. In 1933 he won the Better Homes Medal for his residential designs.‎

Von Friedrich Förster und Clemens Brentano gemeinsam zusammengetragen. Mit dem Erstdruck von Brentano "Aus der Chronik eines fahrenden Schülers" und "Seltsames Begegnen und Wiedersehen" von Arnim; "Das Donauweibchen" von Tieck, von Chamisso: Volks- u. Wiegenlieder. Bemerkenswert die kunsthistorischen Beiträge über Memlings "Jüngstes Gericht" in der Danziger Marienkirche, dem auch die Kupfer gelten, und über die Gemäldesammlungen Boisserée und Bertram. - Da die einzelnen Beiträge nicht mit den Namen ihrer Autoren bezeichnet sind, wird die Lektüre zum heiteren Dichterraten. So wurden die 19 serbischen Lieder den Gebrüder Grimm zugeschrieben, sind aber Übersetzungen von Försters Schwager Savigny. - Friedrich Förster (1791-1868) studierte in Jena Theologie und Kunstgeschichte. Trat, wie Theodor Körner, 1813 dem Lützowschen Freikorps bei und begleitete die deutschen Truppen bis vor Paris. Er war an der Rückführung der von Napoleon geraupten deutschen Kulturgüter beteiligt. Nach dem Krieg lehrte er in Berlin, wurde jedoch später aus politischen Gründen entlassen. - Frontispiz und Titel stark stockfleckig, die ersten 2 Tafeln mit ganz schwachen Flecken, danach nur noch im Schnitt etwas gebräunt. Vorsätze mit Leimschatten. In einem attracktiven Einband.‎

Des rousseurs et pages brunies, quelques défauts de marge sans atteinte au texte, un coin émoussé, petits trous de ver et épidermures sur le cuir, sinon bon état. Complet des 3 cartes annoncées.‎

‎EDITION ORIGINALE rare. Professeur d’hébreu à l’Université de Wittenberg, Forster fut un des "experts" de Luther dont il épousa le dogme selon lequel seul le Nouveau Testament peut éclairer l’Ancien Testament, il faut donc s’affranchir des travaux des auteurs juifs et des interprétations rabbiniques. Auréole claire en pied intérieur puis en gorge, enfin en tête, sinon intérieur bien blanc avec une belle impression, la reliure est en bon état général (ouvrage absent du catalogue B.N.F. : Bibles imprimées). ‎
