Précieux envoi autographe signé de Claude Lévi-Strauss en anglais à l'anthropologue Raymond Firth. * Sir Raymond Firth (19012002), ethnologue néo-zélandais et successeur de Malinowski à la tête du département d'anthropologie de la London School of Economics est l'une des figures majeures de l'anthropologie britannique du XXe siècle. Attaché à l'observation empirique, Firth représente le courant fonctionnaliste, se distinguant ainsi du structuralisme universalisant de Lévi-Strauss, son parfait contemporain. Lecteur attentif et contradicteur courtois des théories de son confrère français, notamment sur la question du totémisme, Firth s'inspire cependant de l'audace théorique de son illustre confrère. Il est d'ailleurs un des rares ethnologues anglais à échapper à la critique de Levi-Straus à l'égard des "conceptions naturalistes qui ont si longtemps imprégné l'école britannique" ("On manipulated sociological models". 1960). En adressant cet ouvrage en anglais au tenant de l'école adverse, Lévi-Strauss soumettait son analyse des symboles naturels à son plus sérieux contradicteur sur ce terrain : un dialogue muet mais fascinant entre les deux grandes traditions de l'anthropologie du XXe siècle. - Photographies et détails sur www.Edition-Originale.com -‎
