Il comprend 47 planches comprises dans la pagination, soit : un titre, 7 scènes mythologiques, 24 représentations botaniques (dont 4 de bouquets), 7 représentations d'outils, vases et supports seuls, et 8 plans de jardins. Les belles représentations botaniques ont été gravées par la peintre et graveuse florentine Anna Maria Vaiani (par ailleurs connue comme liée à Galilée), d'après des dessins du Museo cartaceo, célèbre recueil iconographique encyclopédique constitué par Cassiano Dal Pozzo. La suite mythologique est de la composition de trois grands peintres du temps: Pietro Berrettini dit Pierre de Cortone (auteur de 5 scènes), Guido Reni (une scène) et Andrea Sacchi (une scène). Le travail de gravure est dû au talent de Claude Mellan (une planche) et Johann-Friedrich Greuter (6 planches). Giovanni-Battista Ferrari s'applique à décrire les principaux jardins romains de sa connaissance, et principalement le superbe jardin botanique du palais Barberini au Quirinal: le cardinal Francesco Barberini, qui a financé l'édition du De Flora cultura, y avait réuni les espèces exotiques les plus rares et de toute récente introduction en Europe, comme l'Amaryllis du Cap, l'Hémanthe du Cap ou le Rosier de Chine. Ferrari traite également de la composition et de l'entretien des jardins, de la culture des fleurs (dont un passage sur les moyens de les conserver durant les longs transports), et de l'art des compositions florales. Il s'est servi de ses propres observations et de ses vastes lectures, mais aussi de l'expérience d'horticulteurs éclairés comme Tranquillo Romauli et Giovan Battista Martelletti. Le présent ouvrage est en outre l’un des premiers livres scientifiques à contenir des illustrations faites d’après microscope: la planche représentant 3 graines du Rosier chinois a ainsi été dessinée par observation à l'aide d'un microscope de l'Academia dei Lincei. L’orientaliste et naturaliste jésuite Giovanni-Battista Ferrari (1584-1655) avait appris l'hébreu, le syriaque, l'arabe. Il fut membre de la commission chargée de traduire la Bible en arabe, préfet des études au Collège maronite (1616-1619 et 1628) et professeur d'hébreux, de lettres et de grammaire au Collège romain (1618-1647). Il publia de nombreux traités, notamment de prêches, mais il demeure à la postérité pour ses deux ouvrages d'horticulture et de botanique, ses passions primordiales. Lié à la haute société romaine, il avait pu avoir accès aux grands jardins romains, et, grâce au cardinal Barberini, avait pu fréquenter les milieux savants et artistiques, notamment Cassiano Dal Pozzo, Federico Cesi et l'Academia dei Lincei. Les Barberini furent les mécènes de ses deux livres d'histoire naturelle, le présent De Florum cultura (1633) et les Hespérides (1646, la première monographie sur les agrumes), tandis que Cassiano Dal Pozzo en fournit les deux fois les dessins botaniques. Superbe exemplaire bien complet, conservé dans sa reliure italienne de l’époque en vélin.
