An important retrospective will open in Dublin in February 2017. *********************** Van Mieghem was een rasechte Antwerpenaar, geboren en getogen in de oude haven. Temidden van de toenmalige havenactiviteiten schilderde hij de haven en de mensen die er woonden, leefden en werkten. De buildragers, havenarbeiders, zakkenmaaksters, natiebazen, emigranten, havenkinderen en schippers waren zijn belangrijkste inspiratiebron:. In de Europese sociale kunst van het begin van de 20e eeuw neemt zijn oeuvre een gans aparte plaats in. Zo schreef de Franse conservator Jean-Pierre Melot in de catalogus van de recente internationale tentoonstelling 'Sur les Quais, ports, docks et dockers, de Boudin a Marquet?: ?...Le Belge Van Mieghem est sans doute celui qui parvient a donner l'image la plus fidele du grand manege portuaire?'. Het oeuvre van Eugeen Van Mieghem geeft inderdaad een indrukwekkend, uniek en virtuoos beeld van de mensen rond 1900 in een wereldhaven. Bij hem staat de gewone mens en zijn streven naar een menswaardig bestaan centraal. De bewogen periode waarin Van Mieghem opgroeide was er een van grote maatschappelijke verandering: het moeizame ontluiken van een democratie. Europa onderging geopolitiek grote wijzigingen, oorlog en onrust leidden tot een massale emigratie naar de Nieuwe Wereld. Dit thema werd voor hem een bijkomende bron van inspiratie.

Ces dernieres annees, l'ouvre du peintre du port anversois, Eugeen Van Mieghem, est redecouverte au niveau international par des expositions a Barcelone, Londres, New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, etc. C'est entre autres grace au devouement du conservateur du Musee Eugeen Van Mieghem, Erwin Joos, qui est l'auteur de plusieurs livres au sujet de ce peintre, et qui a commence a analyser son ouvre en 1982. Voici son premier livre consacre a la plus grande collection Van Mieghem au monde: celle du Cabinet municipal d'estampes de la ville d'Anvers, qui compte pas moins de 610 ouvres de cet artiste. Van Mieghem grandit au cour du vieux port d'Anvers. Quand il entre a l'Academie en 1892, il voit des ouvres d'entre autres Van Gogh, Seurat et de Toulouse-Lautrec. En 1896, il est renvoye de l'Academie, et il commence a travailler dans le port. En 1901, il remporte beaucoup de succes lors de "La Libre Esthetique". Peu apres, il epouse Augustine Pautre. Vers 1900, il realise une impressionnante serie de dessins d'emigrants juifs qui partent vers le Nouveau Monde avec la Red Star Line. Fin 1900, Augustine tombe malade, et Van Mieghem la represente mourante dans une emouvante serie de dessins et de pastels.En 1912, une premiere exposition individuelle est organisee, mais le developpement de l'interet national est brusquement interrompu par la Premiere Guerre mondiale. En 1920, Van Mieghem est nomme professeur a l'Academie d'Anvers, et jusqu'a sa mort, il continue a peindre le port d'Anvers et sa population. Il est par excellence l'artiste qui dessine et peint la vie de l'homme laborieux qui vit et travaille dans un port mondial.

In recent years, the work of the Antwerp harbour artist Eugeen Van Mieghem is being rediscovered through expositions in e.g. Barcelona, London, New York, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin. This is particularly due to the author and curator of the Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum in Antwerp, Erwin Joos, who is studying the oeuvre since 1982. This is his first book describing the largest Van Mieghem collection in the world which is located in the Municipal Print Room of the City of Antwerp counting no less than 610 works of the artist. Van Mieghem grows up in the centre of the old Antwerp harbour. In 1892, when attending the Antwerp Academy, he sees works of e.g. Van Gogh, Seurat and de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1896, he is dismissed from the Academy and works here and there in the harbour. In 1901, he is very successful at "La Libre Esthetique". Soon after that, he marries Augustine Pautre. Around 1900, he paints an impressive series about the Jewish emigrants who leave for the New World with the Red Star Line. At the end of that year, Augustine falls ill and Van Mieghem represents her when she is dying in an impressive series of drawings and pastels. In 1912 his first individual exposition is being organised, but the burgeoning international interest is suddenly broken off by the World War I. In 1920, Van Mieghem is appointed professor at the Antwerp Academy, and until his death, he continues his artistic activities in the context of the Antwerp harbour and its population. As no other he draws and paints the life of the man in the street, living and working in a world harbour.

Scarcely any images have been preserved of the mass migration from Europe to the New World which occurred between 1850 and 1940. Of course, photographs do exist concerning the lives of Jewish migrants prior to their departure (Roman Vishniac in the Eastern European shetls), as well as photographs taken on the arrival of those migrants at their destination (Jacob Riis in the Lower East Side of New York). However, images from the ports of embarcation are to be found only in connection with Antwerp's artist Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875- 1930) who, around 1900, produced moving works of art portraying the roughly 2.5 million people who emigrated to the United States and Canada on the Red Star Line. This book tells the story of "The Missing Images" that have been rediscovered internationally in recent years.
