Ensemble de 4 volumes 21x13 cm : demi-reliure en cuir brun à coins brique, dos titré et doré, titre en lettres dorées sur pièce de cuir noir encadrée de filets et festons dorés, décor doré de fleurons entre filets doubles, tranches rouges mouchetées, plats en papier marbré (différent pour les deux derniers, mais toujours dans les ton bleus), XVIII-262+293+214+239 pages, dans le 1er tome : 1 portrait gravé en noir du Pape Pie VII en médaillon, entouré d'un bandeau récapitulant son règne, surmonté d'un nœud décoratif. Les deux derniers volumes comportent une mention de XXe et XXIe tomes, car cette première et intéressante biographie posthume de Pie VII par l'historien Erasmo Pistolesi est quelquefois considérée comme la suite et le point d'orgue de l’œuvre imposante du théologien portugais Giuseppe de Novaes (1736-1821), historien de l’Église catholique et de la papauté : Vie des souverains pontifes/Elementi delia storia di sommi pontifi, dont l'édition publiée à Rome entre 1821 et 1823 comporte 17 volumes. ‎Pie VII, pape vénéré, vécut un long règne à la charnière de deux mondes : l'Ancien Régime et le monde nouveau qui se profilait, entre restes de féodalité, nationalismes exacerbés et espérance en la démocratie et le pluralisme.
