?Signs of Life? is een fotografische zoektocht naar de kern van ons bestaan. Wie zijn we, waar komen we vandaan en waar gaan we heen? Reizend tussen verleden en heden probeert kunstfotograaf Eddy Van Gestel een antwoord te vinden op de vraag of de evolutie die de mens heeft doorgemaakt al dan niet een succesverhaal is. Met signs of Life houdt hij ons mensen een spiegel voor en dwingt hij met zachte hand om naar onszelf te kijken. De vier hoofdstukken ?Perpetuum?, ?Curves and colours?, ?A deal with god? en ?Just Imagine, die ogenschijnlijk los staan van mekaar, blijken bij nader inzien onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Door ze fotografisch met mekaar te verbinden, maakt hij duidelijk dat niets en niemand een eiland is. Want dat is juist het punt dat hij wil maken: we kunnen ons als mens niet los zien van onze omgeving, van mekaar en al evenmin van al het andere leven op deze planeet. De intensiteit en de kwetsbaarheid van zijn werken maakt duidelijk dat onze soort dan wel een uniek bewustzijn en gevoel voor esthetiek heeft ontwikkeld, maar tegelijk ook gebukt gaat onder de onzekerheid van het leven in het algemeen en onder de vergankelijkheid van het bestaan in het bijzonder. Of hoe we als woekerende, superieure soort het almaar moeilijker lijken te hebben om in harmonie te leven met onszelf, met de ander en met deze planeet die ons heeft voortgebracht. Met ?Signs of Life? cre ert Eddy Van Gestel een parallel universum, dat op zichzelf staat, ongrijpbaar en bij wijlen surrealistisch, maar nooit vrijblijvend. 'Signs of Life' is a photographic search for the core of our existence. Who are we, where did we come from and where are we going? Travelling between past and present, art photographer Eddy Van Gestel tries to find an answer to the question of whether or not the evolution that humans have gone through is a success story. With Signs of Life, he holds up a mirror to us humans and gently forces us to look at ourselves. The four chapters 'Perpetuum', 'Curves and colours', 'A deal with god' and 'Just Imagine,' which are seemingly unconnected, turn out on closer inspection to be inextricably linked. By linking them photographically, he makes it clear that nothing and no one is an island. Because that is precisely the point he wants to make: as humans, we cannot separate ourselves from our surroundings, from each other or from all other life on this planet. De afgelopen jaren heb ik het voorrecht gehad meermaals te kunnen samenwerken met topfotograaf Eddy Van Gestel. Ik kan gerust stellen dat een fotoshoot met hem in geen enkel opzicht gelijkt op een shoot met eender welke andere fotograaf. Niet zozeer omdat ik voordien nog nooit naakt had geposeerd maar wel omwille van de manier waarop hij ons als model bij zijn kunstproject weet te betrekken. Als geen ander slaagt hij erin je mee te trekken in de wereld die hij wil cre ren, waardoor ik me niet louter model voelde, maar eerder de hoofdrolspeler in een verhaal dat veel verder reikt dan een verzameling uitzonderlijke foto?s. Ebony is zo?n verhaal. De vrouwen in dit boek zijn geen toevallige anonieme passanten maar mensen van vlees en bloed. Dat de modellen, zowel professioneel als niet-professioneel, zo waarachtig en zelfbewust in beeld komen en naar de lens kijken, heeft er alles mee te maken dat ze zich net als ikzelf volwaardig hebben gevoeld en vooraf de context kenden en geloofden in het ultieme doel van het concept. Ebony voelt voor mij als een vlucht uit het grijze, het gewone, het alledaagse van het leven. Half droom, half realiteit, waar er geen sprake is van dominantie en waar heden en verleden elkaar ontmoeten en moeiteloos en geloofwaardig in mekaar overvloeien. Waar de wereld aan onze voeten ligt, ons Afrikaanse vrouwen. Een wereld waarin we vrouw kunnen zijn in de puurste zin van het woord. Mooi, sensueel, elegant, trots op onze zwarte huid. It has been a privilege to travel and work in Africa over the past few decades. In all these years, however, I have also been an eyewitness to the changes the black continent has undergone. For this is a time of small and large ?game changers? that have not missed their effect here either. The clock may be ticking a bit slower in large parts of Africa, but the changes are unmistakable and perhaps irreversible. I don?t think I?m exaggerating when I say that my grandchildren will see a different Africa than the one that exists today. Isolated ethnic groups are struggling to survive, customs dating back centuries are being watered down, large nature reserves are being sacrificed little by little for the benefit of a growing and sometimes downright voracious economy, and unspoiled views are becoming increasingly scarce. Of course, it is the African people?s right to want to improve their standard of living. But, unfortunately, that ambition goes hand in hand with the loss of so much beauty. . When I looked at some of my old archive footage last year and compared it to the situation today, I noticed how much of that authenticity had already disappeared. And so the idea grew to postpone my other photography projects for a while and set out again to capture the unsurpassed beauty of Africa?s nature, landscapes, people and culture. Now, while there is still time. . The exhibition and the new book ?AFRIKA? tell the story of a present that makes me yearn for better times that are rapidly disappearing. May I, therefore, take you, dear public, on this journey on the cusp of time, a time that is not yet past, to my Africa, mistress for life.

- Eddy Van Gestel is niet alleen een begenadigd fotograaf, hij is bovenal een sublieme verhalenverteller. Hij schuift me met een beeld -een klik als het ware- een heel andere wereld voor. During my long stay in Africa, I came to look at African women in a different light. Not just because of their beauty, their elegance, and their sensuality. African men may well foster the illusion that they are the kings, an illusion is after all just that an illusion. The real cornerstones of African society, carved out of hard granite, are the women. Hard labour. Having children and raising them. Making a living and raking, raking and raking some more to keep your head above water. A little stall with three bunches of bananas, pineapple cut into strips, a handful of potatoes. A coin is money too, and those who save them might perhaps be able to pay the school fees. Maybe. The master of the house looks on passively, like an additional child, a little unsteady on his feet from being out all night. Where women gather, the talk turns to men and their odd ways. Like sisters the women whisper, listen, comfort, and encourage. But still. And yet they remain women first and foremost, a feeling so strong, stronger than the issues of the day it seems. Would it be an exaggeration to say that the need to feel desirable is a universal trait? Because in spite of the struggle for life African women want to be beautiful, appeal to the other sex, be young and stay young. There's not an ounce of difference between the countryside and the city. Hairdressing is a lucrative business there. No stone is left unturned in the battle against transience. Even there. Are they after the attention of men, of whom they have very little good to say? Surely not And life went on like this, without any important accelerations. Until the advent of the internet and smartphones. The world has become a village. A cliche that became a cliche because it?s true. What remained hidden before, has now become visible. In many respects, this new outlook on the world has changed and accentuated the desires of African women at lightning speed. It turned out that what the world has to offer exceeds even a child?s wildest dreams. Suddenly the clothes they had always worn, looked like rags. Black models like Alek Wek, Ajuma Nasenyana, and ? although not African ? Naomi Campbell dazzled on the international catwalks. Showing off their beautiful bodies, gleaming like ebony, ambassadors of millions of women in the black continent, they became a source of inspiration. And so they started to dream. Of a life far away from the pots and pans in tiny huts in tiny villages. Seen through those new eyes, their old lives seemed so small, so far removed from the glamour and the flashing cameras. A new era was born. It opened the eyes of many women to the beauty of their own bodies, and encouraged them to show it. To a greater or lesser degree, but always uncomplicated. But with the dreams came ambitions. Ambitions for a life out of the shadow of men, and freedom from the dominance of background. Studies are now approached differently. They are begun for different reasons and with other goals in mind. Why would what?s possible in other corners of the world, like Europe and America, not apply to them? Why allow exploitation? You can feel that the men are beginning to brace themselves, to dig in their heels. It?s a privilege to observe how these women are shaking off their chains, how the humble, downcast eyes of yesteryear are now filled with self-confidence. A work in progress, to be sure, but this has only just started. Here we are! ?African Queen? is like a dream. A drowsy ode to African beauties, tumbling over the present to the past and back again. Surreal like all dreams. It?s about tom-toms and Vogue, top models and women en route, lugging firewood on their heads, their eyes filled with a recent past when the world still had to discover the black continent. Look at how they have prettied themselves up to have their picture taken!
