Uniformy bound in full red morocco, raised spines with gilt titles, all edges gilt, Gilt fillet on the board edges, Both covers with the supra libro of bishop Victor Maréchal with his motto ''Vita et Spes''. A splendid set, perfectly preserved. [Provenance]. From a calligraphed entry on the half-title of the first part we learn that the ''Breviarium'' was presented by the priests of the ''Canton de Montfort L'Amaury'' which was a part of the diocese of Versailles. This occured most probably on the occasion of the ordination of Victor Maréchal as bishop of the diocese of Laval; in Versailles on 25 july 1887. The unfortunate bishop however died within less than 2 months of his ordination (died 21 september 1887). He probably hardly ever touched his breviarium gift. Two further Latin notes reveal that the book was received by Aug. Maria Batard, priest in Laval who donated the work in 1917 to the monastary of Saint Julian in Chateau Gonthier. A third note states that the work belonged afterwards to Mother Superior of the nunnery of ''Misericorda Iesu'' in the monatary's hospital. (For the supra libro; see Aymond de Saint-Saud : ''Armorial des prélats français du XIX siècle''.) A beautifull and finely preserved example of an expensive liturgical book of the 19th c. Roman Catholic Church. It demonstrates, in a way, the resurgence of the French Church after the devastating blow of the French Revolution."‎

The last part (16pp) is printed in the same typography by the Mechlin publisher-printer Dessain and indicates that the missal was intended for use in the Diocese of Liège (Southern Belgium).. All pages printed in red and black with intricate typographical border. Printed in two columns, with numerous picturial initioals. , . BINDING : Full red-brown morocco, smooth spine with engraved silver title., both covers decrated with important silver decoration: frontcover ''the last supper'' ; backcover ''nativity scene'', two working silver clasps ; corners with large silver triangle protections (9cm). All silver decorations with the silver marking ''J)(D'' (unidentified, probably Liège) All edges gilt. With end papers in red colored silk. Fine silver binding in fine condition with hardly any traces of use,(the outer joints are expertly restored). Interior fine and without stains or foxing. which is rare because these missals were in daily use during mass service in the Roman Catholic church. The missal, always in Latin, was the most important book in the Roman catholic liturgy and served during mass (Eucharist celebration). It was made universal for the Church at the Council of Trent (1545-1563) and virtually made redundant at the Second Vatican Council in the 1960's. Finely preserved missal in a spectacular and wel preserved silver bindin."‎

Binding: Bound in full brown morocco, Both covers completely covered with a large armorial supra-libro; arms of a bishop (a crowned eagle sits above a lion which rests on three colums - unidentified). all edges gilt. Richly decorated raised spine . Binding very well preserved."‎

[Binding] Bound in contemporary full brown red leather. Silk headcaps, Both sides covered with a design of interlacing scrolls and leaves ; in the centre the sacred monogram (I.H.S.) of Jesus, with two working bronze clasps of which one side is mounted on a leather strip . All edges gilt and with elaborate ciselling. The monogram on the front cover slightly damaged, Upper outer joint partly split (without loss of leather or structural damage). A very finely preserved decorative binding of the late 16th or early 17th c. These kind of bindings with the ciselling have become very rare. The ciselling design shows a large intertwined letter V (one upside down) combined with two heart -like figures."‎

Contemporary full black leather, gilt edges. With two copper clasps in working order. Binding with with not unusual slight traces of use but a fine/good copy with working copper clasps.. See B.C.N.I. 9253. This is an exact reprint of the 1639 edition.‎

‎" Antverpiae, (Antwerpen), Ex Officina Christophori Plantini, 1574, in-folio, 32 x 21,5 cm. 6 parts with a total of 718 pp. Voet n° 1685. Collation *4, **-****8, A-S8, T4, V6, Aa-Gg8, a-k8, l4, AA-GG8, +-++4, +++2. Collation against Voet reveals that this copy is complete but for 6 leaves . The missing leaves are: A1 (pp1-2) ; B4-5 (pp. 23-26) ;T4 (canon plate) ; V5-V6 (pp 305-308). Condition description: title with thumbing and a hole repaired (no loss of text), Corner of leaf C7 missing, text replaced in manuscript . Contemporary notes in the margin of e.g. leaf ****3 made illegible. Leaves V1-4 (canon part) with traces of use and thumbing (heavy on pp. 304), some pages of the canon part mounted. Apart from these defects, on the whole still a good copy. The book has been rebound in full calf (end 19th-beginning 20th c. ?). Title label on decorated spine.. Entirely printed in red & black, in two colums, with many woodcut illustrations (some full page) by e.g. M. Hemskerck, P. Galle, Pieter van der Borcht, and cutters Antoon van Leest, Arnold Nicolai, Cornelis Muller. Very few 16th c. missals have survived. They were in daily use for celebrating the Romam Catholic mass (hence the worn pages of the canon part). Most of these books were either removed when completely worn, or put out of use when liturgy changed. When Voet compiled his bibliograpy he could trace two copies of this edition (one in his museum in Antwerp , the other in Munich Bayerische Staatsbibliotheek). The last 30 year another 5 copies have come alight - thanks to Internet. (Pettegree n° 10780 - USTC 406072). Approx. 400 copies were printed, most of these were shipped to Spain. This missal was also printed with copper engravings instead of woodcuts. Allthough ca. 1200 copies were printed with copper engravings not one copy survived."‎

Margins of pp 279-290 repaired, pp.285/6 replaced with leaf of another (in-4°) edition, endpapers not original. Binding; contemporary red morocco, both sides with identical gilt tooling consisting of a large rectangular centrepiece filled with a circular design which is repeated in the corners in a fan-like form. Border with intricate roll-stamp design and a fan-pattern in the corners. Border and centrepiece connected with a tassel pattern, edges gilt & ciselled, with two copper clasps mounted on leather. Some old restaurations, margin of frontcover and some parts of the canon text with thumb-marking, margins of 6 leaves (pp. 279-292 ) rather clumsily restored, but still a fine/good binding probably of Portuguese origin in view of the Lisbon additions."‎

(Apart from slightly bumped corners and some scratching and staining of the covers, a nicely preserved binding), manuscript ex-dono on fly-leave; ''Ex-dono D.Domini mei Episcopi (erased) 1717, nunc ad usum Jacob Sirmond, archid (erased). (First six leaves with a tiny hole). Nice specimen of a liturgical Plantin imprint in a rich morocca binding, lacks unfortunately the ''Pars Hiemalis''."‎
