De twintigste-eeuwse Japanse prentkunst heeft relatief weinig aandacht gekregen. Klassieke landschappen van Hokusai en Hiroshige en de prachtige vrouwenafbeeldingen van Utamaro blijven de dominante vorm. Twentieth-century Japanese printmaking has come in for relatively little attention. Classic Hokusai and Hiroshige landscapes and Utamaro's beautiful images of women remain the dominant form. All the same, since the 1990s museums and private collectors have shown a growing interest in shin hanga ('new prints'): balanced designs printed on luxurious paper, with the finest pigments and in smaller editions. They are the fruit of the traditional yet highly successful collaboration between artist, publisher, block-cutter and printer. It is not so much in their subject matter as their visual language that shin hanga prints set themselves apart from their traditional precursors. Where the classically depicted women were stylized and idealized, their more recent counterparts are based on real models, individually recognizable and full of emotion. The modern landscapes, meanwhile, are impressionistic rather than figurative, using a range of colour nuances to achieve highly atmospheric results. This book offers a unique selection with which to explore twentieth-century Japanese printmaking. Hiroshige: Nature and the City is the most extensive overview of the career of the famed Japanese print artist, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) in the English language to date. Based on the largest collection of Hiroshige in private hands outside Japan, - the Alan Medaugh collection - the catalogue consists of 500 entries, with an emphasis on urban and rural landscapes, fan prints and prints of birds and flowers. Grouped chronologically by subject it presents Hiroshige's interpretation of the urban scenes from his hometown Edo (present-day Tokyo), the great series documenting travel along the famous highways of Japan, and the idylls of nature as represented in his bird-andflower prints. Hiroshige often incorporated poetry in his works and for the first time all textual content is transcribed and translated. Additionally, the catalogue pays due attention to the differences between variant editions of his prints. Thus, it provides essential comparative material for every scholar, dealer, and collector. Five essays precede the catalogue section, each written by specialists in the field. Rhiannon Paget (Curator of Asian Art at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art) provides a general introduction to Hiroshige's life and career. Andreas Marks (Curator Minneapolis Museum of Art) contributes two essays: on the publishers of Hiroshige's prints and on Hiroshige's collaborative works designed with his colleagues. Shiho Sasaki (conservation specialist at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco) discusses the pigment use in Hiroshige's prints while John Carpenter (Curator of Japanese Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art) investigates the source of the poetry of Hiroshige bird-and-flower prints.

"Je n'ai pas l'impression que ce livre ait rencontré chez nous tout le succès qu'il mérite et aussi bien n'ai-je pas lu depuis la guerre beaucoup de plus beau livre (...) Je ne tenterai pas de résumer ce volume. On n'enferme pas en quelques pages une pareille matière humaine, et il est trop clair que ce qui lui donne son prix est précisément le détail concret, l'anecdote réelle, le mot vrai, recueillis par un témoin sincère. Il se présente comme un journal de guerre entre tant d'autres. (...) Quand la guerre éclate, l'auteur a seize ans. C'est un jeune noble, né d'un père prussien, officier de marine, et d'une mère russe. Il s'engage. Il n'est encore qu'un enfant naïf, enthousiaste, fier et pur. Ce qu'il connaît le mieux au monde, c'est le pedigree des chevaux célèbres. Et puis il rêve des femmes, et de l'amour qu'il ignore. En 1915, il est déjà enseigne, dans un régiment de dragons, et se bat en Courlande. Au cours d'une attaque, il est blessé – deux balles dans la cuisse – et fait prisonnier. Alors commence le voyage qui de lui fera lentement un homme, voyage réel au bout de la nuit, et c'est alors aussi que son livre commence. Car il a le grand sens de ne nous rien dire de ses prouesses à la guerre. On le soigne mal. Ses plaies suppurent. On va lui couper la jambe. Ne pourra-t-il plus monter à cheval ? Sera-t-il toute sa vie infirme ? Il pense au suicide quand jamais il n'a tant aimé son corps et la vie. L'intervention d'un médecin allemand le sauve. Ses blessures vont guérir. Mais les armées russes battent en retraite et l'hôpital est évacué. On le transporte en Sibérie. Ils sont douze mille dans un camp aux limites du désert de Gobi, dix mille meurent du typhus. Il fait - 40°. On entasse les morts à la porte des baraques pour les enterrer au dégel du printemps. Lui-même est atteint par la maladie, pense mourir. Totjkoje – c'est le nom du camp – reste dans sa mémoire comme un lieu plus horrible que celui que Dostoïevsky a décrit dans ses “Souvenirs de la Maison des morts”. Il guérit et de nouveau, est emmené plus loin, vers Irkoutzk. Plus de six mille kilomètres le séparent de son pays. La révolution éclate à Pétrograd et à Moscou..." (Jean Guéhenno, Europe, 1933)
