Summary The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is an exceptional epigraphic site. A major restoration campaign (2013-2020) and the recent bibliography dedicated to the building allow us to question hundreds of inscriptions and graffiti which appear on the mosaics, paintings, and walls of this shrine built on the presumed birthplace of Christ. The site exhibits a graphic symphony-if not cacophony-in Latin, Greek, Arabic, Syriac, Armenian, Georgian, Slavic, and Rus scripts, made by pilgrims and travellers as well as the authorities and the different religious communities over the centuries. The goal of this book, which gathers epigraphists from different backgrounds, as well as historians, art historians, and restorers, is to approach those writings from a variety of perspectives. Which typologies of graphic acts are uncovered and can we escape from the labels 'graffiti' and 'inscriptions'? What purpose do they serve? With which materials and using which techniques where they created, and by whom? Where were they located in the complex of the Church, which includes the caves, the cloister, and the monastic buildings? This study explores the stratigraphy of the writings and offers several plans detailing their distribution, revealing a new chapter in the history of the building, in its use by pilgrims. It highlights the various actors in epigraphic communication and the interactions between these graphic acts in the different writings and languages. All these inscriptions and graffiti enable us to build a comprehensive picture of the rich heritage offered by this unique holy site. [et al.] ;[organisee par le musee departemental de Flandre. Une présentation et analyse audacieuses afin de cerner les multiples facettes du maniérisme dans la peinture flamande au travers de plus de quatre-vingt-dix chefs-d'oeuvre couvrant une période très large du début du XVIe siècle avec Pieter Coecke d'Alost (1502-1550) jusqu'au dernier tiers du XVIe siècle avec Pieter Aertsen (1508-1577). Dès le dernier quart du XVe siècle, on pressent les prémices du maniérisme par l'introduction de décors extrêmement raffinés, d'éléments exotiques et d'une recherche dans le mouvement et les poses et ce dans la continuité des Primitifs flamands ! Moins qu'un mouvement, il est un style. Si le terme "maniera" renvoie par son étymologie à l'Italie, il n'en demeure pas moins que le maniérisme en Flandre se caractérise par des formes plurielles qui lui sont propres. De là émergent un goût assumé pour la bizarrerie, une exagération maîtrisée dans les poses contrariées des personnages, un univers à la fois extravagant et poétique au travers duquel le paysage envoûtant se déploie. C'est le point d'orgue de la fusion entre le fantastique et la réalité. Très bon état d’occasion

Van het eind van de zestiende eeuw tot het midden van de zeventiende eeuw is de naam Francken niet weg te branden uit het bruisende artistieke leven in Antwerpen. In die dynastie van vijf generaties trekt n naam extra de aandacht: die van de erudiete Frans ii Francken (1581-1642), die als eerste kunstkabinetten schilderde. Bij hem geen lyrische en barokke ontboezemingen zoals bij Rubens, zijn tijdgenoot, maar een geraffineerde, nog enigszins mani ristische stijl en schitterende kleuren. Een verrukking voor het oog! Frans ii had dan ook een uitgebreide en heel uiteenlopende klantenkring. Met zijn verfijnde werken plaatste hij zich in de traditie van zijn vader, Frans i, en zijn ooms Hieronymus i en Ambrosius i, die hun tijdgenoten verrasten met monumentale Italianiserende altaarstukken. Door de nauwe artistieke banden in de Francken-clan en de intense samenwerking van Frans ii met kunstenaars van buiten zijn familie kon er enorm veel worden geproduceerd.
