Édition originale de cette relation extrêmement précoce d'un jeune diplomate particulièrement doué. John Hay Drummond-Hay (1816-1893) commença sa carrière à l'âge de 24 ans comme attaché à l'ambassade anglaise auprès de la Porte, puis fut envoyé au Maroc pour assister son père, qui exerçait les fonctions de Consul général auprès du Sultan.
