Sir John Cam Hobhouse avait été contraint de démissionner de ses postes de député de Westminster et de secrétaire d'État à l'Irlande pour une question de principe mineure. Sir John Cam Hobhouse had been forced to resign his posts as both MP for Westminster and Secretary of State for Ireland on a minor point of principle. He expected to be re-confirmed in the post but Colonel Evans (Sir de Lacy Evans), as represented in the sketch, stepped in, and snatched away the seat for Westminster; and the re-appointment to the office of Irish Secretary was postponed sine die. Sir F. Burdett, though stretching out his arm as if to save him, sees that assistance is in vain ; and the phlegmatic Lord Althorp, behind, appears to be saying, " Never mind, let him go." Print is 29cm x 37.5cm. It is pasted onto a mustard backing sheet of 35cm x 50cm. Both are in good, clean condition, with just a touch of light foxing to the satire. Small embossed stamp of authenticity (by Thos. McClean) to the lower left. A very nice copy. The sheet is clean, but with a little darkening and foxing to the edges. The top edge has a slight nicking to it. Overall though, a clean and tidy image. A group surrounds a princess and rather awkward dandy who are dancing (but don't look like they are enjoying it). National Portrait Gallery holding NPG D41478 (Uncoloured issue). Obviously Doyle is referencing Irish agitation, but also perhaps the Catholic emancipation act of 1829. Clear image, with some light water staining across the whole image. Pasted onto a mustard card backing. Backing card is chipped and tatty to the edges but could be neatly trimmed. Print is 35cm x 26cm. A tall monument. the figure on the top of the monument is that of Earl Grey, and the two involuntary supporters, sitting below, represent the Duke of Wellington (on the left) and Sir Robert Peel (on the right). A nice clean copy of this satire, with just a touch of foxing to it. Pasted onto a light brown backing sheet. This has a little edgewear, with a small closed tear to the top edge. There is a small embossed stamp from McLean to the bottom right. In its original uncoloured state. Image is 39.5cm x 24cm. Sheet is 51.5cm x 35.5cm. This quotes Earl Grey as saying "Hitherto society, in this happy island, has been constructed upon the model of a cone; the common people forming the base, the monarch the apex, and the various other classes ranging in order in the intermediate space. Lords Brougham and Plunket, on their return to London, from a visit to Windsor Castle, were caught in a fog and lost their way, chiefly, it was said, in consequence of the efforts which the postillions had been making to fortify themselves against the weather. Lord Brougham has mounted the ample shoulders of Lord Plunket, to take an observation, on the principle mentioned by Swift, who says, "It is with human intellects as it is with liquors, the lightest is ever at the top."
