‎Prachtige hardcover met uitgebreid hoofdstuk over de brand van Leuven tijdens de Grote Oorlog (1914). De Leuvense Universiteitsbibliotheek heeft een bijzonder tragisch verleden: afgeroomd door de Fransen in 1795, afgestookt door de Duitsers in 1914 en opnieuw in 1940, en ten slotte verdeeld onder Walen en Vlamingen bij de splitsing in 1970. De geschiedenis van de bibliotheek weerspiegelt zes eeuwen universiteitsgeschiedenis, maar ook vele hoofdstukken Europese geschiedenis en zelfs de wereldgeschiedenis van de voorbije eeuw. Een president van de Verenigde Staten speelt er een grote rol in en een Japanse keizer figureert er. De bibliotheek werd een Amerikaans memorial voor de Grote Oorlog. Een en ander verleent aan de instelling een hoge symboolwaarde en aan het gebouw een emblematische betekenis. Sinds 1970 is de Universiteitsbibliotheek in volle ontwikkeling. De Maurits Sabbebibliotheek is met haar historische collectie een levendig onderzoekscentrum met betrekking tot religie en zingeving. De Campusbibliotheek Arenberg, een wetenschapsbibliotheek in een 16de-eeuws klooster, combineert technologie en erfgoed. Het bibliotheeklandschap reikt van rechtsgeleerdheid tot medicijnen, van colleges in de binnenstad tot het academisch ziekenhuis aan de rand van de stad. Het boek heeft drie leesniveau's: naast een synthetisch verhaal in het corpus, zijn er kaderteksten die deelaspecten belichten. Uitgebreide bijschriften begeleiden de ruim zeshonderd illustraties. Het boek heeft een overzichtelijke indeling: acht hoofdstukken telkens voorafgegaan door een beeldengalerij, als een samenvatting van wat gaat volgen. Een Corpus inscriptionum, met de teksten van alle opschriften op het historisch gebouw aan het Mgr. Ladeuzeplein, en een bibliografie besluiten het boek.
