Kunstenaars hebben al eeuwenlang aandacht besteed aan dood en vergankelijkheid, maar ook aan het lijden en het veroorzaken daarvan door rechtspraak en marteling, oorlog en wreedheid. De bomen die hij schildert zijn niet zomaar het onderwerp omwille van hun picturale en pittoreske betekenis. De berglandschappen zijn er niet om het landschap en de woningen niet om hun architecturale pretenties, hij schildert ze om wat er niet meer is. Afwezigheid speelt een grote rol. Aan de bomen hebben ooit mensen gehangen, meestal na een lynchpartij. De huizen, of het nu riante villa?s zijn, modernistisch of romantisch aandoende stulpjes, zijn elk scène geweest voor een misdaad. Geweld is een blijvend gegeven in het werk van deze nochtans vreedzame kunstenaar. Hoe onschuldig zijn titels ook mogen klinken, de kijker mag zich steeds verwachten aan een of andere dreiging. Zijn reeks ?Smiling Faces? toont de gezichten van misdadigers, gebaseerd op zogenaamde mug shots, de foto?s die de politie van delinquenten maakt. Daan Rau Lege landschappen met verdwaalde bomen; verlaten bergpanorama?s; suburban huizen zonder spoor van leven; koude, afwezige mug shots; cartooneske schetsen van geboeide mensen; fragmenten van gezichten van slachtoffers... De schilderijen die Klaus Verscheure maakt, roepen steeds weer dezelfde vraag op: ?Waarom toont de kunstenaar dit (lege) beeld, wat gebeurt er hier?? Au début des années 1570, un jeune peintre établi à Anvers, Frans Pourbus, reçoit une commande importante pour l?abbatiale de Saint-Martin de Tournai, saccagée par les iconoclastes en 1566 : l?exécution de deux séries de peintures sur bois représentant la Passion du Christ et la Vie de saint Martin. Né à Bruges vers 1545, Frans Pourbus est le fils du peintre Pieter Pourbus. Il a appris son métier auprès de Frans Floris. Il peint des portraits, mais aussi de grands ensembles destinés à orner des autels ou des stalles, à Bruges, à Gand, à Audenarde, à Dunkerque. Sa réputation de peintre talentueux l?a précédé à Tournai où son beau-père, Cornelis De Vriendt, dit Cornelis Floris II, travaille à l?édification et à la décoration du jubé de la cathédrale Notre-Dame. Les panneaux sortis de l?atelier de Pourbus pour Saint-Martin ont survécu aux vicissitudes du temps : à la reconstruction de l?église abbatiale sous le règne de Louis XIV comme aux troubles de la période révolutionnaire. Après la disparition de l?abbaye, ils ont trouvé un abri au séminaire épiscopal fondé en 1808 par l?évêque de Tournai François-Joseph Hirn. De 2012 à 2015, ils ont bénéficié d?un traitement de conservation-restauration à l?Institut royal du Patrimoine artistique à Bruxelles. Aujourd?hui exposés dans la réserve précieuse du séminaire, ils s?offrent aux regards des visiteurs dans toute leur splendeur retrouvée. The visual effects of light, color and movement have been at the heart of Yves Ullens?s work for over 20 years. In order to make visible the fleeting moment of optical phenomena, the Belgian artist uses photography and explores visual perception not perceptible to the naked eye. The vibration of colors and lines is the result of the movement of his camera. The energy of this movement is directly captured by the camera and then fixed on the photographic print without further intervention. His artistic vocation was revealed following the unexpected outcome of a photo taken during a stay abroad. An accidental blur awakened his innate sense of abstraction and interested him in the effects of reflections of light. This photograph marked the beginning of his own style, going beyond the conventions and rules of traditional photography. Yves Ullens' abstract photographs are visual experiences linked to color and light. They remind us of the works of one of the Bauhaus masters, László Moholy-Nagy, who "used light as a formal primary factor, creating space and movement, and eliminating the central perspective of photography". Painting and photography are in constant dialogue in the work of Yves Ullens. He sees photography like a painter and uses his camera like a brush. He explores a free expression of shapes and colors as the abstract artists of the 20th century did with painting. Colors that the Belgian artist draws from the palette of details in his daily environment.
