‎Craigie Horsfield's incredibly moving photographic and video meditations on the phenomenon of the crowd elicit a magical sensation of life passing by at great speed, with both warmth and sadness. Horsfield grasps that the very idea of the crowd transforms itself constantly, both in specific circumstances of congregation (such as dance) and as an historical phenomenon: today we rarely envisage a crowd as a positive agency of social change, for example. Commonly identified as a photographer, Horsfield has often worked in other media--video, sound, drawing, performance and installation--but this volume broaches new terrain, reproducing a series of tapestries titled Confluence and Consequence (a title which might stand for the artist's fascination with crowd activity). ‎Kleurrijke neerslag van de recente beeldenstorm van kunstenaar Fred Bervoets Schilder en graficus Fred Bervoets (1942) kan terugblikken op een carri re van ruim een halve eeuw. Aanvankelijk gold hij vooral als een volbloed schilder, maar in de jaren tachtig verbaasde hij vriend en vijand met grootse etsen die een picturale benadering koppelden aan grafisch meesterschap. De afgelopen maanden werkte Bervoets haast routineus aan zijn etsen op groot formaat, maar 's nachts laat hij zijn verbeelding volledig de vrije loop. Het resultaat van dat zijdelingse teken- en schilderwerk vult ondertussen zowat het hele gelijkvloers van zijn atelierwoning: honderden tekeningen, schetsen, krabbels en schilderijtjes die, afgezien van hun maker, slechts n ding met elkaar gemeen hebben: hun bescheiden A4-formaat. De spontane, automatistische gestualiteit van deze kleine tekeningen vormt het hart van dit boek, waarin ook Bervoets' meer monumentale etswerk sinds 2013 verzameld werd. ‎Jef Geys (1934 - 2018) graduated from the Antwerp art academy and settled in Balen, also in the Kempen, where he worked as an art teacher at a girls' school for more than 30 years. In fact, this was one of Geys' many ways of formulating a critique of society and of art ? a critique that is a fundamental value in his extensive, diverse and complex oeuvre. Geys has been described as an artist caught between a regional and international context, cut off from social reality. That is not necessarily true. In many ways he is a follower of Marcel Duchamp, who championed the strategy of stealth retreat. Geys has chosen to base his work on provincial references. All his exhibitions are accompanied by an issue of his Kempens Informatieblad, which he publishes himself and designs in such a way that it resembles a local, freely distributed newspaper. One of his main strategies is subversion which, as he rightly points out, can only happen 'within the system'. In 1970 Geys was invited to prepare a solo exhibition at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He replied with a letter to the museum ? and to the Ministry of Culture, Defense and Justice ? proposing to blow up the museum. Nevertheless, the exhibition took place the following year. This is characteristic of his method, which is process-oriented and confrontational: Geys creates situations so full of contradictory potential that they threaten to blow themselves up; by dismantling it, he shows the corrupting powers of current reality all the more convincingly.‎

‎Monografie over de in 1984 plotsklaps overleden kunstenaar. Heyvaert, werkte met tekeningen, foto?s en mail art, maar is vooral gekend voor zijn werk met gevonden objecten. Hij haalt banale voorwerpen uit het dagelijkse leven uit hun context, brengt ze binnen in de kunst, ontneemt ze hun functie en geeft ze met een minimale ingreep een ongekende kracht en intensiteit. Je voelt er de spanning tussen twee polen in, tussen de objectieve, intellectuele lading en de unieke, subjectieve, emotionele lading. Een toile cir e verknipt hij zoals kinderen dat doen met een stukje gevouwen papier, een vork ontdoet hij van de tanden, twee takken verbindt hij met een touwtje. Het zijn kleine, po tische interventies, maar ze hebben Heyvaert op de kaart gezet als experimenteel en minimalistisch kunstenaar die een gevoelige snaar wist te raken bij kunstkenners en collega-kunstenaars. Zijn interventies vinden hun oorsprong in zijn studie als architect. Architectuur heeft te maken met de dominantie van materialen en met het werken op schaal. Die twee zaken zijn duidelijk terug te vinden in het oeuvre van Heyvaert.‎
