‎First printing of the influential Danish biochemist and physiologist Henrik Dam's thesis on the biological significance of the sterines. Dam was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1943 for his work in discovering vitamin K and its role in human physiology, the present work being a seminal step towards this. ""During the years 1932 and 1933 Dam worked at the laboratory of Rudolf Schoenheimer in Freiburg, Germany, thanks to a Rockefeller fellowship he obtained to further his studies of the metabolism of sterols. In 1933 he received the D.Sc. in biochemistry at the University of Copenhagen with a thesis entitled Nogle undersøgelser over sterinernes biologiske betydning (Some Investigations on the Biological Significance of the Sterols). The next year Dam worked with Paul Karrer in Zurich. He continued to hold his post as associate professor until his appointment as professor of biochemistry at the Polytechnic Institute in Copenhagen. This appointment, however, was in absentia, because since 1940 Dam was on a lecture tour to the United States and Canada under the auspices of the American-Scandinavian Foundation. ‎First printing of the documentation of the discovery of the dietary anti-haemorrhiagic factor, Vitamin K. The Danish biochemist and physiologist Henrik Dam (1895-1976) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1943 for joint work with Edward Doisy work in discovering vitamin K and its role in human physiology. Dam's key experiment involved feeding a cholesterol-free diet to chickens. It was thus that he in 1929 investigated the role of cholesterol, by feeding the chickens a cholesterol-depleted diet. After several weeks, the animals developed hemorrhages and started bleeding uncontrollably. The bleeding could not be stopped with purified cholesterol alone - a second compound had to be added to the food. Dam isolated this dietary substance needed for blood clotting, namely that which is now known as the coagulation vitamin or vitamin K. The new vitamin received the letter K because the initial discoveries were reported (here) in the German journal Biochemische Zeitschrift, in which it was designated as Koagulationsvitamin (Vitamin of Coagulation).G&M: 1062.‎

‎Wassily Kandinsky (Moskou 1866-Parijs 1944) is van niet te onderschatten betekenis geweest voor de kunst. Zijn ontwikkeling verliep van figuratief, bijna impressionistisch werk, naar een organische, hybride vormentaal. Dit boek laat de artistieke weg van de Russisch-Franse kunstenaar zien. Hij was een van de pioniers van de abstracte kunst die de kunstwereld op zijn kop zette. Kandinsky werd geboren in tsaristisch Rusland, vestigde naam als leraar aan het vermaarde Bauhaus in Duitsland, ontvluchtte het fascisme en kwam terecht in Frankrijk waar hij tot Fransman werd genaturaliseerd. Oorlogen, crises en revoluties hadden hun beslag op de kunstenaar. Zijn onwaarschijnlijke levensverhaal is terug te zien in de rijkdom van zijn kunst. Dat er zoveel van hem bewaard bleef, is te danken aan zijn weduwe Nina. Zij schonk kunst en archiefstukken aan de Franse staat. Daar kwamen ze terecht in Centre Pompidou, een van de grootste musea voor moderne en hedendaagse kunst ter wereld. Dit boek verschijnt bij de tentoonstelling in H?ART Museum. Het museum laat topstukken zien als Mit dem schwarzen Bogen (1912), Accord r ciproque (1942) maar ook het levensgrote Salon (1922). Het is de reconstructie van het Bauhauswerk dat tijdens het bombardement op Berlijn verloren ging.‎

‎Summary The cult of saints is one of the most fascinating religious developments of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Christians admired martyrs already in the second century, but for a long time they perceived them only as examples to follow and believed they could pray directly to God, whom they addressed as 'Our Father'. A new attitude toward saints, now considered above all as powerful friends of God and efficient intercessors, started to emerge in the third century. Once this process gained momentum in the Constantinian era, the cult of saints constantly changed and rapidly adapted to new conditions and demands. This evolution highlighted many factors: the popularity of specific saints and the different types of sanctity, the spread of cults and customs, and the ways in which the saints were described, visualised, and represented. This volume seeks to capture the dynamic of these adaptations, showing both those aspects of cult which evolved quickly and those which remained stable for a long time. It studies the evolution of the cults in a broad period from the third to the seventh centuries and in various regions from Gaul to Georgia, with a particular interest in the two greatest centres of the cult of saints: Rome and Constantinople.
