‎Décembre 1920. Le banquier et collectionneur brugeois Émile Renders achète dans une vente publique un tableau en très mauvais état. Il s'agit de la copie d'un des joyaux du Louvre : la fameuse Madeleine du Triptyque Braque de Rogier van der Weyden. Six ans plus tard, lorsqu'elle refait surface, la croûte est mystérieusement devenue un superbe tableau de maître, attribué à l'entourage de Hans Memling. Comment expliquer cette étrange métamorphose ? Ce livre démonte la stratégie mise au point par Renders pour se constituer, en un temps record, la plus belle collection belge de Primitifs flamands de l'entre-deux-guerres. Il dévoile comment le banquier s'associa à un homme de l'ombre, le restaurateur Jef Van der Veken, pour « remettre en état » des tableaux anciens de faible valeur qu'il dénichait dans de petites collections privées belges. Il montre enfin comment l'incomparable savoir-faire technique de Van der Veken, allié au génie financier de Renders, allait conduire à l'une des plus magistrales supercheries artistiques du vingtième siècle. Un piège dans lequel tomba l'un des principaux dirigeants nazis, Hermann Goering, satrape aveuglé par sa mégalomanie, qui acquit la collection Renders en bloc et au prix fort. Sans le travail interdisciplinaire d'historiens, d'historiens d'art, de restaurateurs, et l'apport essentiel des laboratoires, cet incroyable jeu de dupes n'aurait pu être démasqué. Un « catalogue raisonné » de l'?uvre de Jef Van der Veken est également publié ici pour la toute première fois... plus de 300 tableaux retouchés, restaurés, voire entièrement peints de sa main.‎

‎Dans les années 1510-1520, Tournai traverse une zone de turbulence. Sur le plan politique, elle n?est qu?un pion dans la grande partie d?échecs que se jouent François Ier, Charles Quint et Henri VIII : après avoir été une « bonne ville de France » pendant plusieurs centaines d?années, elle tombe à contre-c?ur sous la coupe anglaise, avant de passer aux Habsbourg. Le monde intellectuel local est en ébullition lui aussi : l?humanisme, allié à la montée en puissance de l?imprimerie, pénètre les esprits et l?on songe même à doter Tournai d?une université. C?est dans ce contexte de crise qu?un enlumineur anonyme met la dernière main aux Heures de La Tramerie, un manuscrit de dévotion privée au destin étonnant, commencé à Paris vers 1430, puis laissé en friche pendant plus de trois quarts de siècle. Son nouveau propriétaire, un Tournaisien, l?adapte aux usages locaux : il le dote d?un calendrier et charge un enlumineur de compléter son illustration : treize grandes scènes à personnages et de somptueuses marges décorées, peintes sur chacune de ses cent cinquante pages. Quatre autres manuscrits ont pu être réunis autour de cette ?uvre exceptionnelle, ainsi qu?un livre d?heures imprimé, tous décorés par la même main. Réalisés pour des commanditaires français ? le dernier gouverneur de Tournai, un évêque amateur de lys, une dame issue d?une éminente famille poitevine ? ces livres attestent la vitalité insoupçonnée de la création artistique à Tournai, à une période-clé de l?histoire européenne.‎

‎Contributions to the Study of the Flemish Primitives(CSFP 12) Until now, little was known about manuscript illumination in Hainault before the arrival of Simon Marmion at Valenciennes around 1458. This monograph intends to bridge that gap by highlighting the work of Marc Caussin, a Hainault miniaturist active in Valenciennes from the 1430s to the 1470s. An existing Cambrai missal paired with by a highly detailed contractual account has led to the attribution of fourteen manuscripts to Caussin. Alongside standard devotional books, Caussin illuminated more personalized commissions such as a copy of the Chroniques martiniennes for Philippe de Croy, count of Chimay. Caussin also worked for other renowned bibliophiles, the most illustrious being the Duke of Burgundy himself, Philip the Good. Caussin?s activity could be placed in context thanks to an abundance of archival sources. Some fifty documents give unique information concerning his family background and his professional network in Hainault and other cities in the southern Netherlands. Exploited for all the richness of their content, the manuscripts grouped around Marc Caussin have allowed us to reconstruct an artistic, social, religious and intellectual milieu about which very little was previously known.‎
