Title with woodcut and 2 oval woodcuts on pp. 14. Bound in contemporary supple vellum. Fine copy. Privilege signed by Busschere, dated 1st febr. 1603. USTC Nr. 1002567. With manuscript ex-libris on the title of the first work ''Dom. Prof. Soc. Iesu. Ant[verpiensis] 1639. Privilege signed by the Roman Catholic censor Peeter Vinck on Febr. 18th 1603. Only one copy in OCLC Nr. 901221321 ( not in USTC - Oct. 2018). Very rare collection of two religious publications in Dutch printed probably in the same month of February 1603 by Jan Mommaerts. [1] is a study on indulgences made by Costerus on the occasion of an Indulgence proclaimed by Pope Clemens VIII in the year 1600. [2] This short prayer against heretics is probably also by the hand of Costerus allthough nowhere his name is mentionned in the publication. Costerus is famous for his relentless attacks against hereretics and his many publications on this subject. This rare prayer ( only one copy known in the Plantin-Moretus Museum) contains at the end two full page wood engravings by Pieter I van der Borcht. The title page has a large woodcut by the same artist.‎

(on p. 185, of the ""sica tragica"", a dagger), cont. vellum, ex-library stamp on title, ex-dono label on first paste down (Antwerp Jesuits 1910), manuscript ex-dono by the auhor on title-page; ""Francisco Schotte author dd"". Also old rubbers stamp on title page (Antwerp S.J. College). (Bibliotheca Belgica Tome I pp. 900 , Belgica Typographica 741). USTC 402479. Pp. (129)-166 contain; ''Urbium Litterae ac Testimonia de Pedro Panne a Jesuitis ut volunt Calvinistae ad Comitis Mauritii caedem summisso atqua ob id Leydae plexo.'' This a liberal translation with additions by Costerus of ''antwoorde op de hollandtsche sententie tegen Pieter Panne''. Pieter Panne, a native of Ypres, was accused, convicted and beheaded for trying to murder Maurits of Orange at the wedding of Amelie, daughter of Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde. It was alleged that he acted on the instigation of the Jesuits of Douai (Dowaai), hence this defense of the Jesuits by Costerus against the Calvinists. This ex-dono copy belonged to Franciscus Schott (died 1625), brother of Andreas Schott. In 1621 F. Schott was professor of music at the Antwerp Jesuit college (Droeshout, Annales du collège d'Anvers, III , 286)."‎

‎ Réunion de deux ouvrages rares de Franciscus Gomarus ; tous deux sortis des presses de Christophe Plantin. Gomarus ''fut pasteur d'une Église réformée hollandaise à Francfort de 1587 jusqu'à 1593. En 1594 il fut nommé professeur de théologie à l'université de Leyde et, avant de s’y rendre, reçut de l'université de Heidelberg le grade de docteur. Il enseignait à Leyde quand, en 1603, Jacobus Arminius devint un de ses collègues à la faculté de théologie et commença à enseigner des doctrines pélagiennes et à créer un nouveau parti dans l'université. Immédiatement, Gomarus s’y opposa dans ses cours avec l’appui de Johannes Bogerman (1570-1637). Arminius cherchait à rendre l’élection dépendante de la foi tandis que ses adversaires voyaient dans la prédestination absolue la seule règle de foi selon laquelle les saintes Écritures tout entières devaient être interprétées. Gomarus devint alors le chef des adversaires d'Arminius, qui furent à partir de là nommés gomaristes. Il engagea deux fois une controverse personnelle avec Arminius à l'assemblée des États de la Hollande, en 1608, et fut un des cinq « gomaristes » qui affrontèrent cinq arminiens ou remonstrants à la même assemblée en 1609. Après la mort d'Arminius peu de temps après, Conrad Vorstius, qui partageait ses opinions, fut nommé pour lui succéder, malgré l'opposition énergique de Gomarus et de ses amis furieux de sa défaite Gomar renonça à son poste et devint à Middlebourg en 1611 prédicateur à l'Église réformée, enseignant la théologie et l’hébreu dans l’école nouvellement fondée. De là, il fut appelé en 1614 à une chaire de théologie à l’académie de Saumur, où il resta quatre ans avant d’accepter une invitation à enseigner la théologie et l’hébreu à Groningue, où il devait rester jusqu'à sa mort le 11 janvier 1641.'' Deux tâches claires aux quatre derniers feuillets de ce même volume. Du reste, bonne condition. Rare. ‎
