‎Cesar De Cock werd geboren in Gent, en groeide op als schilder-muzikant. Hij verhuisde in 1854 naar Parijs waar hij in contact kwam met de school van Barbizon. Zijn doofheid dwong hem de muziek vaarwel te zeggen en zich volledig aan de schilderkunst te wijden. Hij ontwikkelde een eigen stijl in getemperd koloriet, en mag aanzien worden als een voorloper van het impressionisme in Belgie.‎
