‎Voor Vincent van Gogh was tekenen 'de wortel van alles'. Dat verklaart de grote hoeveeldheid tekeningen die de kunstenaar tijdens zijn korte, turbulente leven heeft gerealiseerd: meer dan duizend werken, veelal een weerslag van persoonlijke, vaak eenzame verkenningen in de opkomende moderne wereld, en van angsten, iets wat ons vandaag nog steeds aanspreekt. De tekeningen van Vincent van Gogh is een uitgediept relaas van het genie en de eigenheid van wat de kunstenaar op dat gebied verwezenlijkt heeft. Kunsthistoricus Christopher Lloyd onderzocht vanuit een nieuw perspectief Van Goghs werken op papier. Door de tekeningen thematisch te bestuderen - van doordachte figuurstudies over prachtig weergegeven plekken en landschappen tot pakkende portretten - wist hij de successen, mislukkingen, experimenten, beproevingen en teleurstellingen van de kunstenaar vast te leggen. Van Gogh, die voornamelijk autodidact was, benaderde het tekenen instinctmatig, maar zag al snel in hoe belangrijk het was om de grammatica van de kunst te beheersen - anatomie, modeltekenen, verkorting, perspectief - evenals de materialen en technieken, om zo zijn emotionele reacties op een onderwerp zo levendig mogelijk over te brengen. Aan de hand van voorbeelden uit de omvangrijke en beladen familiecorrespondentie van de kunstenaar, schetsboeken en vergelijkende kunstwerken van D rer, Rembrandt en anderen, biedt dit overzicht ons een beter begrip van waarom de tekenkunst binnen Van Goghs unieke oeuvre zo belangrijk is en ze de intensiteit en reputatie van zijn schilderkunst evenaart. Christopher Lloyd is een Brits kunsthistoricus en was van 1988 tot 2005 'Surveyor of The Queen's Pictures', curator van de schilderijen van de Royal Collection. Hij schreef monografie n over schilders, onder meer Camille Pissarro, offici le museumcatalogi en algemene overzichten van de Britse Royal Collection. Daarnaast organiseerde en cureerde hij tal van tentoonstellingen, en realiseerde hij, in 1992, een zesdelige televisiereeks over de schilderijen in de Royal Collection.‎
