‎Summary Starting from a political reality, which is, at the same time, artistic and cultural, the book Ars Hasburgica aims to review the still so common historiographical conception of the Renaissance that conceives this period from a geographically Italocentric, artistically classicist and politically centered the idea of "national" arts and schools. But Renaissance is a more global and complex phenomenon. What this book aims to offer is an idea of the art of that period that considers the role played by the Habsburg dynasty and its various courts in this period, trying to verify whether, by applying other historiographic models, and having the art of the Casa de Austria as a focus, traditional ideas can continue to be maintained well into the twenty-first century. We refer to the so-called "Vasari paradigm", on which art history of the sixteenth century has largely been built over the last centuries. It is also intended to structure concepts about the art of the period not so much around nationalist considerations and identities of the arts, but to raise these issues throughout ideas such as that of the court as a political, artistic and cultural sphere, in the wake of the classical studies by Norbert Elias, Amedeo Quondam or Carlo Ossola. ‎Het Vlaamse wandtapijt uit de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw is een schitterende parel aan de kroon van ons nationale erfgoed. Grote Vlaamse weefcentra als Brussel, Oudenaarde, Mechelen, Brugge of Doornik voerden met ongeevenaarde technische verfijning de prachtigste weefmodellen of kartons uit, vaak van de hand van beroemde kunstschilders. Bernard van Orley en Michiel Coxcie waren specifieke kartonschilders, maar ook grote namen als Rubens, Jordaens en Rafael leverden ontwerpen voor belangrijke tapijten. Uit de wandtapijten spreekt dan ook de vernieuwing van de vormentaal die zich in de renaissance voltrok. Het kostbaarste van dit kunstpatrimonium werd voor Vlaamse wandtapijten voor de Bourgondische hertogen, keizer Karel V en koning Filips II uit Spaanse collecties geselecteerd en samengebracht met de wandtapijten van de Sint-Pietersabdij, de enige nog bestaande reeks die in de zestiende eeuw werd vervaardigd voor een private opdrachtgever.Veertig wandtapijten uit de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw illustreren het belang van dit artistieke genre voor het Habsburgse Hof en zijn Spaanse en Bourgondische voorgangers. Zowel de Katholieke Koningen, Margaretha van Oostenrijk, Maria van Hongarije als Karel V behoren tot de grootste verzamelaars van wandtapijten uit de Renaissance. Maar ook de Spaanse en Vlaamse adel hebben talrijke weefsels aan kerken en kathedralen nagelaten. Dit is onder andere gebeurd in Pastrana, Zamora, Palencia, Zaragoza en Lerida, waar zich een van de belangrijkste Europese verzamelingen van Vlaamse wandtapijten bevindt. Achter deze kunstwerken gaat een hele wereld schuil. Ze leenden zich uitstekend voor het ambulante bestaan van zowel het hof van de Bourgondische hertogen als dat van keizer Karel V en zijn zoon Filips II en werden op bagagewagens en schuiten doorheen heel Europa vervracht. De mobiele frescos waren natuurlijk niet alleen bedoeld om het persoonlijke comfort, het esthetische genoegen of het sociale prestige van de opdrachtgever te verhogen. De gevarieerde composities van religieuze, historische, mythologische of allegorische aard hadden meestal een politieke connotatie. Vooral de beeldvorming rond de dynastie, de staat en het imago van de vorst vormde voor het Bourgondische en Spaans-Habsburgse bewind een belangrijke bekommernis. Ook dit aspect wordt in het boek belicht.‎
