‎Vins de Graves Des environs de Bordeaux‎

‎Paris J. Hetzel 1868 Première édition de ce livre cartonné rare. Fait partie de la série "Richesses Gastronomiques de la France". Il s'agit du deuxième volume sur les environs de Bordeaux. (Le premier volume portait sur les vins de Bordeaux et le troisième sur les vins de Saint-Émilion). Le texte est de Charles de Lorbac et les illustrations de Charles Lallemand. Il s'agit apparemment d'un exemplaire restauré, avec un dos en toile rouge, des plats cartonnés crème avec des titres et des décorations rouges et noirs (couvertures d'origine) collés sur le premier plat. 62 pages. Quelques entailles sur les bords de la couverture collée, et quelques marques / assombrissements sur les planches. L'ouvrage tient encore bien. L'intérieur de l'ouvrage est bien relié. Il y a une tache d'humidité sur le bord supérieur de l'ouvrage, qui n'affecte ni le texte ni les illustrations. Il y a des rousseurs modérées dans l'ensemble de l'ouvrage. Un peu d'usure sur les bords des pages, en particulier sur le dernier feuillet de la table des matières. Il s'agit néanmoins d'un bon exemplaire. Le contenu comprend : Les Graves ; Pressace ; Vilenave d'Ornon ; Léognan ; Sarcignan ; Mérignac ; Talence ; Gradignan ; Cesins ; Canéjan ; Eyzines. 36 gravures de Lallemand accompagnent l'ouvrage. 380 par 290mm (15 par 11œ pouces). ‎First edition of this scarce hardback. Part of the "Richesses Gastronomiques de la France" series. This is the second volume on the environs of Bordeaux. (The first volume was on the wines of Bordeaux itself, and the third covered the wines of Saint-Émilion). The text by Charles de Lorbac and the illustrations by Charles Lallemand. This seems to be a restored copy, with a later red cloth spine, cream hardback boards with red and black titles and decoration (original covers) pasted down to the front board. 62 pages. A little nicking to the edges of the pasted down cover, and some marking / darkening to the boards. Still holding well. Internally, the work is well bound. There is a damp stain to the top edge of the work, not affecting text or illustrations. There is moderate foxing throughout the work. A touch of edge wear to the page edges, particularly to the final contents page. Still a decent copy. Contents include: Les Graves; Pressace; Vilenave d'Ornon; Léognan; Sarcignan; Mérignac; Talence; Gradignan; Cesins; Canéjan; Eyzines. 36 engravings by Lallemand accompany the work. 380 by 290mm (15 by 11œ inches). ‎A letter from the right honourable Charles James Fox, to the worthy and independent electors of the city and liberty of Westminster. ‎

‎London J. Debrett 1793 Deuxième édition. Bel exemplaire de cette lettre ouverte adressée à ses électeurs par le radical Charles James Fox. Il y défend sa position radicale et son opposition à la guerre avec la France. Cette lettre est importante car la France déclara la guerre au Royaume-Uni six jours plus tard. Bien que cet exemplaire semble dépourvu de la moitié du titre et d'un blanc, puisqu'il commence par la page de titre, et que le feuillet suivant porte la signature B, notre exemplaire suit la pagination de l'OCLC 6595972. Nous supposons donc que la deuxième édition n'avait pas de demi-titre. La table des matières est complète. A la fin se trouve un seul feuillet de publicité de Debretts, avec un "the" suspendu indiquant qu'il devrait y avoir un deuxième feuillet (ici manquant). Cousu avec de la ficelle (comme pour tous les autres exemplaires que nous avons vus). Les couvertures ont un peu de marques et d'usure, mais à l'intérieur, le contenu est propre et bien rangé. [ii], 43, [1]. pages. Charles James Fox, un réformateur Whig radical, a été élu pour la première fois pour un borough pourri en 1768 alors qu'il était encore mineur. ‎Second edition. A nice copy of this open letter to his constituents, from the political radical Charles James Fox. It argued his radical position and opposition to war with France. Significant here, as France declared war on the United Kingdom six days later. Although this copy seems to lack the half title and a blank, as it begins with the title page, and the next leaf has the signature B, our copy follows the pagination of OCLC 6595972. So we assume that the second edition had no half title. Contents themselves are complete. To the end is a single leaf of advertisements from Debretts, end with a hanging "the" indicating there should be a second leaf (here lacking). Sewn with twine (as with all other copies we have seen). The covers have a little marking and edgewear, but inside, the contents are clean and tidy throughout. [ii], 43, [1]. pages. Charles James Fox, a radical Whig reformer, was first elected for a rotten borough in 1768 whilst he was still underage. He first represented the significant borough of Westminster in 1780, and remained their member of parliament until his death in 1806. 20cm x 11.5cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 6595972. .‎

‎Engraving by Charles Beyer after a painting by Sir David Wilkie. Attractive small etching. In a courtyard, a messenger on horseback delivers a letter to a family. Behind recent passe partout with gilt detail. The publisher's information is hidden under the mount. Slight staining to the corners of the engraving not affecting picture (presumably why the mount was made so tight). The image itself is 120 mm x 100 mm. The mount is 210 by 170mm (8Œ by 6Ÿ inches).‎

Il s'agit de la seule marque de bibliothèque. L'intérieur de l'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé, avec quelques rousseurs sur les pages de garde uniquement. Léger assombrissement des bords. Quelques annotations au crayon par intermittence (non gênantes). 316 pages. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 1544480. 22.5cm x 15cm. "Un bref compte-rendu de l'histoire, à l'époque chrétienne, de cette voie pervertie de l'âme que nous appelons magie, ou (à un niveau inférieur) sorcellerie, et de la réaction contre elle... il y a deux auteurs qui ont mis l'étudiant le plus occasionnel du sujet sous une lourde dette - le Dr Montague Summers et le défunt Dr Henry Charles Lea.... Je ne suis moi-même convaincu ni par les convictions du Dr Summers ni par le mépris du Dr Lea" - extrait de la préface de l'auteur. Williams a commencé sa vie en travaillant dans une librairie méthodiste, mais il s'est rapidement orienté vers la poésie et la rédaction d'ouvrages sur des thèmes spirituels. Il a suscité l'admiration d'Auden, d'Eliot et de Lewis.‎

A sticker to the front boards shows that this was once the property of the Boots Booklover's library. This is the only library mark. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a little foxing to the end papers only. Slight darkening to the edges. Some pencilled annotations intermittently (non obtrusive). 316 pages. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 1544480. 22.5cm x 15cm. "A brief account of the history in Christian times of that perverted way of the soul which we call magic, or (on a lower level) witchcraft, and with the reaction against it. there are two authors who have laid the most casual student of the subject under heavy debt - Dr. Montague Summers and the late Dr. Henry Charles Lea. I am not myself convinced either by Dr. Summers belief or by Dr. Lea's contempt" - from the author's preface. Williams began life working in a Methodist bookshop, but quickly progressed to being a poet and author on spiritual themes. He attracted the admiration of Auden, Eliot and Lewis. .‎

Le bloc de texte est impeccable, avec des gravures magnifiquement propres et lumineuses. 260 par 210 mm (10Œ par 8Œ pouces). Première édition latino-française de la collection de Faerno, une édition anglais-français avait été publiée deux ans auparavant. Gabriele Faerno (d. 1561) a été chargé de compiler une sélection de fables ésopiennes par son protecteur le pape Pie IV en c. 1550. Le recueil de 100 fables fut publié en 1563 seulement, après la mort de Faerno. La traduction française en vers de Charles Perrault a été publiée pour la première fois en 1699. Son objectif était de parvenir à une combinaison idéale de proximité du texte latin avec la poésie subtile de La Fontaine. La présente édition latino-française était utilisée comme manuel à l'époque. [19], 45, 238, (2) pp. 4to. 19th Century half calf over marbled boards. Marbled endpapers. Some poem / section numbers are printed incorrectly, but all are present, and all engravings are present. Slight rubbing to the edges of the spine, and a touch of bumping to the boards. The text block is spotless, with the engravings beautifully clean and bright. 260 by 210mm (10Œ by 8Œ inches). This is a scarce London edition. First Latin-French edition of Faerno'?s collection, an English-French edition was published two years before. Gabriele Faerno (d. 1561) was commissioned to compile a selection of Aesopian fables by his protector Pope Pius IV in c. 1550. The collection of 100 fables was published in 1563 only, after Faerno'?s death. Charles Perrault?'s French translation in verses was first published in 1699. His aim was to achieve an ideal combination of closeness to the Latin text with La Fontaine?'s subtle poetry. The present Latin-French edition was in use as a text book at the time. ? ‎HOWARD, Henry Charles, 13th Duke of Norfolk (1791-1856). An original volume relating to inheritance provisions for his children, 1841. Sixteen pages, with the remainder of the volume unused. It is headed: "Information connected with the Norfolk Family Settlement at the 31st May 1839." It notes annuities to the Earl of Surrey £10,000, Countess of Surrey £1,000 and detailed provisions for other members of the Duke's family, includingthe Earl and Countess of Arundel & Surrey, and their younger children Lord Edward (Fitzalan) Howard, Lord Bernard Fitzalan Howard, Lady Mary Howard and Lady Adeliza Howard, born in the early 19th century. There are also references to The Glossop Estate, and settlements in 1841. An annuity to Dr Sandon and his wife is mentioned, as is a re-settlement agreed on the date of the Duke of Surrey's marriage. Full contemporary straight grain dark red morocco, gilt lettered 'Miscellaneous' on the upper cover. Slight wear to the head of the spine, and lacks the clasp. It bears the engraved stationers' label of Bebbington's Bath Paper Warehouse, 426, Strand. 120 mm x 190 mm. Henry Charles Howard and his father were Roman Catholics, although his mother Lady Elizabeth Belasyse was Anglican. It is not clear if Howard was formally and nominally raised Anglican, or if he was already Catholic when he married into a prominent Whig (and therefore anti-Catholic) family in 1814. In 1829, after Catholic emancipation, the Earl of Surrey (as he now was) was elected a Member of Parliament. In 1839 his son, Henry Granville Fitzalan, Fourteenth Duke of Norfolk, married Augusta Lyons, the daughter of Admiral Sir Edmund (afterwards Lord) Lyons, the ambassador at Athens. This necessitated a revision of his father's inheritance provisions.‎

Adverts for recent publications to rear. [vi], 351 [i], [4]. pp The author (anonymous here but Charles Townshend Wilson) was with the Coldstream Guards. He purchased his commission in 1839, was an Ensign by 1842, a captain in 1846 and Lt Colonel in 1854. He served at Alma, Balaclava and Inkemann, as well as at the Siege of Sebastapol. He received the Crimea Medal with 4 bars, and retired by sale in 1855. Died in 1887. 200 by 130mm (7Ÿ by 5 inches).‎

Original blue paper wrapper bound in. To the front cover paper is written "Par l'auteur" presumably by Seringe. One plate and one folding table (complete.) Rough cut page edges. A little foxing to the pages only. VI + 1 ff. + 244 pp. Text in French. 210 x 130 mm (8Œ by 5 inches). Nicolas Charles Seringe, first Teacher at the Academy of Bern then Professor of Botany and member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Lyon wrote a work with the exact description, classification and history of flowers. He sought to avoid scientific language, and to arrange the objects in an easy order, through which one can easily learn about plants, how to propagate them and finally how to use them.‎

A l'intérieur, l'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé, avec un peu de marques et de noircissement sur les pages. Les pages en français et en latin aident à la traduction et à la lecture du texte. Publié à l'origine en 1827, cet ouvrage a été abrégé à partir d'un abécédaire latin plus long de Lhomond. Dans l'ensemble, un bel exemplaire de cette réimpression. Marbled boards. A touch of bumping / handling only. Marbled end papers. Internally mainly clean and tidy, with a little marking / darkening to the pages. French and Latin facing pages help with the translation / reading of the text. Originally published in 1827, this was abridged from a longer Latin primer by Lhomond. Overall an attractive copy of this reprint. Charles François Lhomond (17271794) was a French priest, grammarian, and educator who was a native of Chaulnes, Somme. ‎La Marseillaise, chant patriotique ‎

‎Paris Lavigne 1840 Livre très rare illustré de 7 planches coloriées à la main par Charles Marville et dédié au chant patriotique de la Marseillaise. Reliure en demi-percaline rouge, dos lisse orné de titres dorés, couvertures d'origine conservées. Au cours de l'année 1840, la Marseillaise retentit plus d'une fois lors d'événements marquants. Elle est reprise par les officiels lors d'une brève période de fièvre patriotique, en 1840, alors que, sous le ministère Thiers, la France soutient le pacha d'Égypte Méhémet-Ali et est menacée par l'Angleterre, la Russie et la Prusse. Cette fièvre n'est que passagère : Thiers est remplacé par Guizot et la Marseillaise redevient l'hymne officiel. Seuls les partisans de la Réforme ou d'un changement plus radical osent la chanter et sont poursuivis. Elle est chantée le 28 juillet 1840 par des manifestants républicains sur la place de la Bastille, lors de l'inauguration de la colonne de Juillet, inauguration à laquelle le roi, prudent depuis la machine infernale de 1835, ne participe pas. En décembre 1840, elle est à nouveau chantée avec ferveur plusieurs soirs de suite à Paris par une foule qui se prépare à accueillir les cendres de l'empereur, puis aux Invalides lors de la cérémonie elle-même, le 15 décembre. En l'entendant depuis l'hôtel de Biron (actuel musée Rodin) où elle réside, la fondatrice de la congrégation des Dames du Sacré-Cur, Madeleine-Sophie Barat, s'alarme, le chant lui rappelant ses années 1792-93 de peur vécue dans sa ville natale de Joigny (Bernard Richard, Madeleine-Sophie Barat, sainte de Joigny, Yonne, et sa communauté dans le monde). "C'est en 1840 une chanson qui excite les uns, mais qui suscite l'effroi chez les autres..." Exemplaire bien conservé. Non paginé mais 14 pages. 140 x 90mm.‎

‎Very rare book illustrated with 7 hand-coloured plates by Charles Marville and dedicated to the patriotic song of the Marseillaise. Covered in a red half-percaline binding with smooth spine adorned with gilt titles and original covers preserved. During the year 1840, the Marseillaise sounded more than once during significant events. It was taken up by officials during a brief period of patriotic fever, in 1840, when, under the Thiers ministry, France gave its support to the Pasha of Egypt Mehemet-Ali, and was threatened by England, Russia and Prussia. This was only a temporary fit of fever: Thiers was replaced by Guizot and the Marseillaise was once again skipped as the official anthem. Only the partisans of the Reform or of a more radical change dare to sing it and are prosecuted. It was sung on July 28, 1840, by Republican demonstrators on the Place de la Bastille, during the inauguration of the July column, an inauguration in which the king, cautious since the infernal machine of 1835, did not participate. In December 1840, it was again sung with fervour several evenings in a row in Paris by a crowd preparing to welcome the emperor's ashes and then at the Invalides during the ceremony itself, on December 15. Hearing her from the Hôtel de Biron (now the Rodin Museum) where she resides, the founder of the congregation of the Ladies of the Sacred Heart, Madeleine-Sophie Barat, is alarmed, the song reminding her of her years 1792-93 of fear experienced in his native town of Joigny (Bernard Richard, Madeleine-Sophie Barat, saint of Joigny, Yonne, and her community in the world). "It is in 1840 a song which excites some, but which arouses dread in others..." Well-preserved example. Unpaginated but 14 pages. 140 x 90mm (5œ x 3œ inches).‎

An interesting English guide dedicated to horse owners, illustrated with a beautiful steel engraving (first printing). based on a work by the author Harry Hieover pseudonym of Charles Bindley (1795/61859).Half tan morocco, smooth spine decorated with blind stamped design, gilded title, green percaline boards, the first decorated with a gilt decoration. The boards and spine are in good, clean condition. A touch of rubbing only. Internally the book is in very nice condition. Some light foxing otherwise very good copy. Bookplate of Alfred André, a great bibliophile, from a Nimes Protestant family who made their money in the silk trade, then in banking. He became regent of the Bank of France in 1871. xvi, 216, 32 pages. 32 page edverts fro new works by Longman to rear. 180 by 110mm (7 by 4Œ inches). he author Charles Bindley (1795/61859) was a British sports writer specializing in horses and outdoor sports, particularly hunting and stable management. .‎

Pourtant on lui retire sa légion d'honneur et la Croix de guerre en juillet 1920 pour propos "pacifistes". Il est à cette époque collaborateur du journal de Barbusse, Clarté. A leur décharge , la plupart des signataires de cette brochure furent trés critique ou opposant a Staline .‎
