"Eames: Beautiful Details" celebrates the seamlessness and fluidity in which Charles and Ray Eames operated as both a husband-and-wife team and as designers unrestricted by traditionally profesionally boundaries. Select details of their life and work, from their refined designs to to their innovative experiments, and even including images depicting the everyday poetic moments of their lives, and are shared here in this exhibit within a book. Inspired by Charles's immersive and original slideshows, in which he expertly selected and grouped images together that communicated information in an aesthetic, direct, and accessible way, this book strives to visually created the Eameses' life and work by taking the viewer through a delightful joruney, focusing on their "beautiful details." The packaging design of the "Eames: Beautiful Details" slipcase is a pattern inspired by the triangles and colors of one of their most inventive, if lesser-known, designs for children, simply called, "the toy." It also pays homage to the patterns they used on their well-loved House of Cards. The Eameses brought a sense of humor and joy to everything they created, and the design and layout of the book aims to convey that spirit in a visual feast for the eyes. It is a testament to the Eameses and the lasting value of good design that their Eames lounge chair, created in 1956, endures today as perhaps the most recognizable and coveted piece of mid-century furniture design. Their experiments in technological innovations, like molded plywood and fiberglass, resulted in such classic pieces as the bent plywood LCW and DCM Chairs, the Molded Plastic Chairs, and the Aluminum Group; all of which are still in production by Herman Miller. Likewise, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in 1949 in Pacific Palisades, and it is still revered as a landmark of modern architecture. Built as part of the Case Study program in California, sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, it was one of the earliest experiments in pre-fab construction, using off-the-shelf industrial parts. But unlike the austerity of much of modern architectural design, their factory-like shell was lovingly lived in along with their personal collections of folk art, treasures from their travels, and everyday objects refreshingly displayed with affection and without pretense.

As music moved from the church and court into the public sphere, competitions ? as loci of taste, judgements of one performer?s excellence over another, or as a way to improve the musical abilities of a nation ? became increasingly important throughout Europe. Such competitions had multivalent meanings: in some cases, they became a way to achieve public fame and have a lucrative career in an era when individual patronage was on the wane. In others, they encouraged new national schools of performance, attempted to resurrect a historical tradition, or placed an official imprimatur on an existing one. European Musical Competitions, 1700-1940: History, Contexts and Meanings is the first volume to investigate the rise and preponderance of such contests throughout the continent. The fourteen essays in this volume address competitions by individuals from Johann Sebastian Bach to Josefa Bustamante in locations across Europe from Dublin to St. Petersburg and Osijetk to Paris. It further illumines how government-sponsored institutions in such diverse places tried to both foster musical abilities and foment taste. Summary The present volume comprises editions, by several of the major scholars now working in the field of medieval Irish apocrypha, of a selection of important eschatological texts. Two of these, edited by John Carey, are works original to Ireland: The Vision of Adomn n, an account of the afterworld notable for its vividness and complexity; and The Two Sorrows of the Kingdom of Heaven, a shorter text which describes the judgement of souls and the end of the world with reference to the destinies of Enoch and Elijah. Caoimh n Breatnach provides editions of the Irish versions of some of the fundamental texts of Christian apocalyptic: The Assumption of Mary (supplemented by a closely related Latin variant, edited by Joseph Flahive), and one of the Redactions of The Vision of Saint Paul. Professor Breatnach also contributes a series of accounts of Antichrist: these belong to a type that has long been regarded as typically Irish, but for which Charles D. Wright here supplies a broader context in an innovative and important study. Fr Martin McNamara MSC introduces the collection with a discussion of "Some Aspects of Medieval Irish Eschatology". This is the first volume of a two-part collection: the texts edited in the sequel (CCSA 22) are concerned with the events of the end time, and in particular with the theme of the signs before the Day of Judgement. TABLE OF CONTENTS Avant-propos Introduction. Summary Bad arguments have never been in short supply. The scholarly interest they have elicited in recent years, on the other hand, is quite exceptional. Fallacy studies have become a well established and flourishing field of argumentation theory. Without notable exception, the ever-growing literature on argumentative failures suffer from a conspicuous lack of interest in Mediaeval fallacy theory - arguably the most creative stage in the whole history of argumentation theories. The standard story is that after Aristotle got off to a tentative start, the study of fallacies laid dormant until people at Port Royal and John Locke revived it in spectacular fashion. Fallacies in the Arabic, Byzantine, Hebrew and Latin Traditions will show that this narrative is misleading, if not altogether false. Free of boundaries or limitations imposed by differences in discipline, language and culture, the volume will provide ample and unambiguous record of the exegetical proficiency, technical expertise and argumentative savoir-faire typically displayed by mediaeval logicians jurists and theologians on issues whose complexity we underestimate to some extent - such as the problem of defining what a fallacy is or the pitfalls of linguistic expression. Working its way from the inside out within each mediaeval tradition and comparing mediaeval findings and lessons to contemporary views and trends, the volume will show where the potential for novelty and the rightful place of mediaeval theories of fallacies lies within contemporary argumentation studies. Summary Robert Wakefield and his brother Thomas were pioneers in the study and teaching of Hebrew in early modern England. Robert was trained at Cambridge, acquired expertise in Aramaic, Hebrew, and Arabic, and obtained professorial status in Louvain, Cambridge, and Oxford. Thomas took possession of his brother's books and manuscripts upon his death; he enjoyed long tenure as praelector in Hebrew at Cambridge and was a compulsive annotator of his books. This volume draws together the political, linguistic, and bibliographical materials that shaped the careers of these two scholars, revising previous claims and producing a compelling analysis of Hebrew learning in sixteenth-century England. Handsomely designed and richly illustrated, this publication surveys the magnificent spectrum of projects undertaken by French architect and interior designer Charles Percier (1764-1838). After gaining an illustrious reputation for supervising the scenery at the Paris Opera during the French Revolution, Percier was later appointed by Napoleon Bonaparte. With the Emperor's support, he developed the opulent versions of neoclassicism closely associated with the Napoleonic era, and now known as Directoire style and Empire style. Percier worked on the renovation or redecoration of many of France's royal palaces, including the Louvre, the Tuileries, and the chateaux of Malmaison, Saint-Cloud, and Fontainebleau. The full scope and variety of Percier's design projects are revealed in this book, which also includes archival material detailing Percier's relationships with patrons and peers.

Henry Taylor's first comprehensive monograph, The Only Portrait I Ever Painted of My Momma Was Stolen, features over 200 works from 1992 onward. For three decades the iconic artist has worked his way through New York, Los Angeles, Europe, and Africa, documenting what he sees. In his circle are artists, musicians, writers, and performers, as well as friends from his ten years as a psychiatric technician. Taylor's topical range also encompasses notable figures and celebratory moments of African American cultural history as well as politically-charged and painful subjects such as police brutality and the prison industrial complex. Suites of Taylor's paintings, sculptures, and installations are reproduced alongside the artist's handwritten notes -- accounts of sittings, sketches, and Henryisms. Contributions by Charles Gaines, Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah, Sarah Lewis, and Zadie Smith touch on the nature of truth, racial terror, memory, and belonging in America. This definitive monograph celebrates Taylor's direct and revealing portraits, offering a tonic to a divisive cultural moment.

Carol Bove (b. 1971) is known for her simple yet intricate assemblages of found and made objects. Carefully arranged on pedestals, elevated platforms, or directly against walls and ceilings, these yield unexpected, poetic, and multilayered meanings, which seem to derive from the composition of the objects rather than the inherent substance of the individual components. Using a wide range of materials, including books, driftwood, peacock feathers, metal, concrete, foam, and loans from other artists, Bove?s works are subtle assemblages resisting categorization despite their determined relationships with modernist display methods. This beautifully designed book contains deadpan, intricate illustrated instructions on how to recreate Bove?s delicate sculptural assemblages, as one would receive when installing in the gallery space for exhibition. A very special and unique book for anyone interested in Carol Bove?s work. Edited by Carol Bove, with text by Charles Harlan
