‎Édition française, traduite de lÉdition suédoise, dun des plus célèbre traité darchitecture naval produit au XVIIIe siècle. Exemplaire truffé de 80 pages de notes et schémas additifs manuscrits en anglais. Au XVIIIe siècle, larchitecture navale est léquivalant de ce que sera au XXe lindustrie aéronautique et spatiale. Cependant, en 1750 elle demeure un art empirique reposant sur les connaissances et lil de quelques maîtres charpentiers exceptionnels : la plupart des navires militaires et marchands sont construits sans plan précis, daprès de simples esquisses et maquettes darsenaux. Louvrage du français Duhamel Du Monceau « Eléments de l'Architecture navale.. », publié en 1752, est ainsi une véritable révolution. Il aborde pour la première fois la construction navale de manière scientifique et accessible à tous. Dès lors, les chantiers civils et militaires adoptent un travail rationnel sappuyant sur les sciences physiques et mathématiques et des plans parfaitement établis. Le présent ouvrage du Suédois Frédéric Henry de Chapman, (1721-1808) parait pour la première fois en 1775. Traduit dans plusieurs langues, il ne connaitra quune édition en en anglais publiée en 1820 (Smith, Cambridge). La présente édition française est due à Sébastien Vial de Clairbois, (1733-1816), ingénieur naval et un historien de la Marine, qui y ajoute ses propres notes. Ce traité est luvre dun marin qui connaît parfaitement la construction des vaisseaux. Frédéric Chapman est né à Göteborg, le grand port suédois de la mer du Nord. A l'âge de 15 ans, il part pour Stockholm afin d'y apprendre l'art de la construction navale. Il ouvre avec un associé un chantier naval à Göteborg dès 1744. Cela ne l'empêche pas de voyager beaucoup et même d'être brièvement arrêté en 1741, alors qu'il visite sans autorisation un chantier anglais. En 1750, il suit les cours de mathématiques de l'anglais Thomas Simpson (1710-1761). Il va ainsi utiliser la méthode de Simpson (calcul numérique d'une intégrale) pour déterminer de façon mathématique les différentes caractéristiques d'un navire (volumes, surfaces, centre de gravité). En 1757, il est engagé par les chantiers royaux suédois. Il en prend la direction sur ordre du roi Gustave III (1771-1792) qui l'anoblit en 1772. Il est alors chargé de relever la flotte suédoise tombée quelque peu en décrépitude. Il construira au total 24 vaisseaux de ligne. Nommé au grade de vice amiral en 1791, il cesse son activité en 1793, alors âgé de 72 ans. L'ouvrage se divise en IX chapitres traitant de chaque aspect de la construction : déplacement, stabilité, centre de gravité, résistance, voiles, proportions des bâtiments et des gréements et pratique de la construction. Il est illustré de 8 tableaux hors texte dont 2 dépliants et de 11 planches hors texte dont 3 dépliantes de schémas de navires en coupe. Exemplaire ayant été utilisé par un chantier de construction britannique : il est truffé dune quarantaine de feuillets manuscrits à lencre dadditions et notes, schémas, tableaux de calcul ainsi que dannotations dans les marges, le tout rédigé en anglais. Ainsi, alors quune édition anglaise était disponible à partir de 1820, des architectes britanniques ont continué à utiliser le présent exemplaire et lont complété par de larges ajouts manuscrits. Copy with 80 pages of notes and handwritten addendum diagrams in English. In the 18th century, naval architecture is the equivalent of what will be the 20th aerospace industry. However, in 1750 it remains an empirical art based on the knowledge and the eye of some exceptional master carpenters: most military and merchant ships are built without a specific plan, based on simple sketches and arsenal models. Duhamel Du Monceau's work "Elements darchitecture navale" published in 1752, is a revolution. It addresses shipbuilding for the first time in a scientific way and accessible to all. From then, the civil and military shipyards adopt a rational work based on the physical and mathematical sciences and perfectly established plans. This work by Sweden Frederick Henry of Chapman, (1721-1808) appeared for the first time in 1775. Translated into several languages, he will not know an edition in English until 1820 (Smith, Cambridge). This French edition is due to Sébastien Vial de Clairbois, (1733-1816), naval engineer and a naval historian, who adds his own notes. This treatise is the work of a sailor who knew perfectly the construction of the vessels. Frederic Chapman was born in Gothenburg, the great Swedish port of the North Sea. At the age of 15, he left for Stockholm to learn the art of shipbuilding. With a partner he opened a shipyard in Gothenburg from 1744. This did not prevent him from traveling a lot and even being briefly arrested in 1741, when he visited an English shipyard without authorization. In 1750 he took the mathematics classes of English Thomas Simpson (1710-1761). He will thus use Simpson's method (numerical calculation of an integral) to determine mathematically the different characteristics of a ship (volumes, surfaces, center of gravity ...). In 1757, he took the charge of the Swedish royal shipyards for King Gustav III (1771-1792). He was then relieving the Swedish fleet, which had fallen somewhat into decay. He built a total of 24 ships. Appointed Vice Admiral in 1791, he ceased his activity in 1793, when he was 72 years old. The work is divided into IX chapters dealing with every aspect of the construction: displacement, stability, center of gravity, resistance, sails, proportions of buildings and rigging, and construction practice. It is illustrated with 8 out-of-text tables and 11 out-of-text plates, including 3 folding cutaway schematics. Copy used by a British construction site: it is riddled with forty sheets of manuscripts in ink of additions and notes, diagrams, tables of calculation as well as annotations in the margins, all written in English . Provenance: James Ronalds, London (ex libris manuscript) and "Institution of Naval Architects, Scott Library Collection, 1930 (printed label). Thus, while an English edition was available from 1820, some British architects continued to use the present copy and supplemented it with large manuscript additions.‎

‎Summary For her commissioning and performance of a French vernacular version of the Arabic tale of the Thousand and One Nights - recorded in one of the most vivid and sumptuous extant late thirteenth-century manuscripts - as well as for her numerous other commissions, Queen Marie of Brabant (1260-1321) was heralded as an intellectual and literary patron comparable to Alexander the Great and Charlemagne. Nevertheless, classic studies of the late medieval period understate Marie's connection to the contemporary rise of secular interests at the French court. Pleasure and Politics seeks to reshape that conversation by illustrating how the historical and material record reveals the queen's essential contributions to the burgeoning court. This emerging importance of the secular and redefinition of the sacred during the last decades of Capetian rule becomes all the more striking when juxtaposed to the pious tone of the lengthy reign of Louis IX (1214-1270), which had ended just four years before Marie's marriage to his son. That Marie often chose innovative materials and iconographies for these objects - ones that would later in the fourteenth century become the norm - signals her impact on late medieval patronage. Pleasure and Politics examines Marie's life beginning with her youth in Brabant, to her entry into Paris in 1274 accompanied by her retinue of courtiers, artists, objects, and ideas from the northern courts of Brabant, Flanders, and Artois. It continues with her elaborate coronation held for the first time in the Sainte-Chapelle the following year, her years as queen of France - often full of intrigue - and her long, productive widowhood, until her death and burial in 1321. With a focus on her Brabantine and Carolingian heritage joined to her status as French queen - often expressed through pioneering styles of heraldry - her commissions included ceremonies, marriage treaties, and intercessions, as well as a stunning collection of jewels, seals, manuscripts, reliquaries, sculpture, stained glass, and architecture that she gathered and built around her. This study also reveals Marie's regular collaboration with family, friends, and artists, in particular that with the poet Adenet le Roi, women of the French court like Blanche of France (1252-1320), and relatives from the north like Robert of Artois (1250-1302).
