‎In 1997, the Russian chess grandmaster Garri Kasparov lost to the chess computer Deep Blue and regarded his loss as a tremendous success of human ingenuity. That moment marked a historic turning point in the development of artificial intelligence, although Alan Turing and David Champernowne had already designed the Turochamp in 1948, the first algorithm that assigned a value to chess pieces and was supposed to determine the best possible chess move. AI has been closely intertwined with everyone?s existence for much longer than we realize. Just think of the smartphone, the search engines on the internet, the translation software, even washing machines use AI to increase efficiency, to save energy,? Certain AI applications detect fake news and disinformation. When Carl De Keyzer was about to travel to Russia in 2021 as a kind of revisiting of Homo Sovieticus (1989) and had received the official permission to do so, had already arranged his tickets, visa and guide, tensions quickly rose and tanks were suddenly amassed at the border. Fortunately, De Keyzer decided not to travel there after an attempt that had already been postponed due to Covid, because war broke out shortly after. Although AI is used and the photographer?s gaze is absorbed by the algorithmic data of the computer, De Keyzer remains the designer, the builder and the user of AI. He directs, decides, creates and makes choices based on the computer images, as befits an artist who works with available material and new technology. He not only feeds the machine with his own images (such as from Zona, 2003), with photographs of previous projects for which he traveled abroad, he ultimately adjusts AI by, for example, teaching the system to think asymmetrically. This is how AI learns from what De Keyzer decides and does as a photographer. The power and the essence of documentary photography, which De Keyzer has been associated with for decades and in which he is a grandmaster, is like hyperrealism: collecting and revealing (the truth of) the reality that the photographer was confronted with at a certain time in the given circumstances, without staging, as a kind of statement against fake news. But now the computer has become the camera as a journey through the virtual that Carl De Keyzer can make in his living room, so to speak, without having to travel and while he can visit locations repeatedly on the screen. Independent of time and circumstance, the image/imagination is created. A new reality emerges, while at the same time that reality reveals what may be unfolding in Putin?s head as a fictional story. War, power and politics (common threads in De Keyzer?s oeuvre) are propaganda and are directed, manipulated, and play with the (un)reality and eroticism. They are guilty of spreading incorrect messages. Even in war there is often a kind of unreality in all the horror. Serveer het vervolgens in de Roaring Twenties, New York, met op de achtergrond de drooglegging en de naderende financiele crisis. In de roman Parties 'shaken' en 'stirren' de personages cocktail na cocktail om de onnoemelijke verveling van zich af te schudden. In clandestiene bars (speakeasy's) en jazzclubs in Harlem proberen zij de akelige leegte te vullen met cocktails, jazzmuziek, meer cocktails, overdreven aandachttrekkerij, nog meer cocktails, holle frasen, seks en nog veel meer cocktails. Onder hen het echtpaar David en Hilda Westlake, in wie zonder al teveel moeite Scott en Zelda Fitzgerald te herkennen zijn. David heeft iemand vermoord en zijn vrouw heeft, volgens haarzelf, zelfmoord gepleegd. In deze satire legt hij als een Bret Easton Ellis van de twintiger jaren moeiteloos de vinger op de zwakke plek van de zelfbenoemde intellectuele elite. In een verzameling van hyperbolen vermaakt en bespot hij de upperclass en toont hij de minder fraaie kanten van de Roaring Twenties. Genadeloos en hilarisch weet hij de 'lost generation' in woorden te vatten. De kenmerkende illustraties van Maurice Vellekoop vervullen de rol van suikerrandje aan het glas en maken het boek helemaal af. Kortom: Parties laat zich lezen als prachtig tijdsdocument in woord en beeld. Na verschijning in Duits en Engels, lanceert de Parvenu Parties voor het eerst in een Nederlandse vertaling. ‎Le livre est beau, la couverture intrigue. Ce n?est pas une bande dessinee, mais un album avec des dessins splendides et des phrases profondes. Au debut, c?est blanc dans ma tete. Je ne pense a rien et ce rien parait blanc. Pareil a la page ou l?on a envie de dessiner. Ou semblable aux nuages les plus lents. J?ai un poids un milieu du cerveau ou les pensees ne passent pas. Premiers dessins sur fond blanc, un plan de moins en moins flou, on voit une main bandee. Seconde page, nous passons au fond noir qui continuera jusqu?a la fin de l?album. Les bandages de la tete laissent deviner des oreilles, chien ou chat ? L?etre se reveille. Il est dans une chambre d?hopital. Un policier l?interroge et lui apprend qu?il a ete victime d?un attentat et qu?il est un chien. Il va pouvoir retourner chez lui. ? Chienne de vie, que fais-je dans cette ville ? On dirait que la haine commence ici ? . Il retourne dans un monde ou le voisin pourrait etre son ennemi, ou le chien domine et extermine le chat, tiens, ca titille du cote des reminiscences, un pays ou les reves de jour sont interdits !! Nous traversons des dessins qui pourraient faire penser, au ghetto de Varsovie, tout au moins comme je me l?imagine. L?angoisse et la peur suent, les regards sont fuyants. Chaque phrase de cet album est un coup de poing dans le plexus ou dans la memoire. Peu de texte, mais, il va droit au but, sans fioriture. Carl Norac, en phrases tres courtes, nous fait sentir le malaise de Rousseau, sa quete, son angoisse. Carl Norac et Stephane Poulin nous parlent de tolerance, du racisme, de la peur, de la quete et que ce soit les pages dessins ou les pages textes, l?emotion est toujours omnipresente et nous happe. La memoire blanche permet d?ecrire un nouveau livre de sa vie, de regarder les autres sans aucun a priori ni sectarisme. Oui, vraiment un tres, tres bel et bon album emprunt de beaucoup de poesie. Vous le relisez, une autre face apparait. Maintenant, il faut que je le rende a la bibliotheque, mais je l?aurais bien garde celui-la aussi. Je vous en recommande vivement la lecture.‎
