Summary The Occupatio is one of the longest yet least-known Latin poems surviving from the earlier Middle Ages. Composed by the famous abbot Odo of Cluny (d. 942), the work retells the story of humanity's fall and redemption as a series of episodes intended to help monastic readers focus their wandering thoughts. In pursuing those aims, the poem represents a uniquely ambitious attempt to reconcile the intellectual heritage of the late Carolingian Church with the spirituality of ascetic reform movements emergent in the tenth century. This book offers an improved edition of Odo's Latin text together with its manuscript glosses, as well as a Modern English translation and detailed commentary. Introductory chapters offer helpful orientation to the character of the poem, its major themes, sources, language, style, and transmission. Summary In his work The Book of the Reformation of the Order of Preachers, the Dominican friar Johannes Meyer (1422-1485) drew on letters, treatises, and other written records, as well as interviews, oral accounts, and his own personal experience, to record the blossoming of the Observant reform movement. The result is this sprawling, eclectic, yet curiously intimate account of the men - but mostly of the women - who devoted their lives to revitalizing the Dominican order in southern Germany. With his reliance on their accounts and archives and respect for their intellectual abilities and spiritual resolve, Meyer's treatment of medieval Dominican women provides a model from which today's historians stand to learn. The introduction contextualizes Meyer's celebratory work within a more objective historical background; it is followed by a full translation, making this remarkable history available to English-speaking readers for the first time.

This volume is a collection of reflections from leading senior and junior historians regarding the merits of historical comparativism in the field of Iberian history. The first purpose of the book is to encourage a dialogue between scholars of the Iberian Empires and to foster a reconsider how they see the broader history of the early modern world in light of recent historiography. The second aim of the book is to prompt scholars of other regions in global history to consider the recent literature on the Iberian Empires anew, to move beyond the tropes of the Black Legend and narrative of growth, splendour, and decline, and to study those imbrications had connected disparate parts of the world and which the postcolonial turn has unearthed.
